Spoke to dr twice re my tongue, speaking to them again today as my tongue is just getting worse!! Dentist thinks it's a deficiency but isn't sure and referred me to hosp for investigation. Hubby and I had hand foot n mouth 7 wks ago, his went after 10 days and I've continued with this white tongue abs patches of sore red and ulceration! Cracked tongue it's so so painful! Red sores inside the cheeks, so bizarre! Tried daktarin for oral thrush for 2 days and no change at all just feels worse. Sorry if tmi on the pics just int to read what people think this may be or if anyone else has this horrible issue. Ps I'm really run down my 2yo attends nursery I'm ill every 2-3 wks for past year, hence I guessed oral thrush or it is that abs I need tablets as it's so bad...😩

Sorry daktarin Mau be working it's just my tongue is even more white since I started it 2 days ago but the white coating does budge but has to scraped white hard, I'm thinking it looks so much like oral thrush!

Difficult to say really. I suffer with recurrent oral thrush as part of my autoimmune issues (lupus, Addison’s etc) and I’m under an oral specialist for it. You don’t necessarily need the white patches for it to be thrush, that’s a bit of a myth. The soreness alone means it could be that. The GP could do a swab. 2 days isn’t long enough for Daktarin gel to work. Generally needs at least 3/4 days. I use it nightly as a preventative treatment and use Corsodyl mouthwash in the mornings (although this does stain your teeth, the staining can be removed by a hygienist).

Look at things like anaemia, b12 deficiency and autoimmune conditions too. (Sorry if you’ve mentioned this - writing whilst getting Ds ready for school)!

@Bagelsandbrie Thank you so much! Everything you've said is all what I was thinking too! It could be anemia I had it bad a year ago and was never followed up and they have missed that off my bloods 🤦‍♀️ will mention when they call, I'll keep on with the daktarin I think I'm
Being impatient so desperate for this to bog off it's been 6 wks now so utterly miserable and painful! 😖 thank you!! X x

That's a typical symptom of a B12 deficiency do I agree with your dentist! As long as you haven't had any form of B12 in supplements in the last 4-6 months (or drank any energy drinks) ask your doctor to test your B12 and folate levels. If you take any B12 supplements, you'll get a false high and won't know if you are actually deficient. If you are deficient, supplements won't help you - if you aren't absorbing from your food, you won't absorb from a tablet. You'll need B12 injections for life!

I strongly recommend a group on Facebook called Vitamin B12 Wake Up if you want more advice on B12 deficiencies and treatment!

@Tillow4ever oh god I didn't know that I take b12 daily have done for a while but the dentist thinks it's either a deficiency or oral thrush, atm I'm trying a gel for a wk but she's going to send me off for tests for deficiency's as the Gp has not checked for b12! The dr called me today and it wasn't even a dr! Had this for 6 wks and was a nurse who told me to continue on the gel I'd brought myself and told me to call bk in a wk if its still an issue! I told her I take b12 she never said anything else 🤦‍♀️

@Tillow4ever my folate a while back was very low too, how do you absorb it if injected but not orally in supplements? I didn't know that!!

I sometimes get this (have been anaemic). I find using corsodyl mouthwash eases up the symptoms but ultimately you need to treat the underlying cause.

I had something like this years ago. Constant ulcers and sore tongue. My doctor blasted it with antibiotics and it cleared up. No idea what caused it.

FTEngineerM · 07/09/2021 22:52

Mine looked like that after getting covid.
After mooching about online there’s a thing called covid tongue🤷🏽‍♀️Who’d have thought it.

proudwomansexmatters · 07/09/2021 23:39

I had a tongue exactly like this. Coupled with lots of tiredness and brain fog and just not feeling quite right. I got lots of ulcers too.

It was a folate deficiency. GP sent me for a blood test and prescribed 3m of folic acid and iron tablets. I felt much better in no time!
