why would a 4mo's skin blister?

ds2 (4.5mo) has 2 blisters on his leg

one is small, was fluid-filled when i spotted it, at the top of his leg (within the nappy area). skin not particularly red around it

the other i only spotted after it had burst - it's on the back of the calf (hence me not spotting it earlier) - and the damaged skin is very red. the skin around it is a little sticky, so it must still be leaking a little

he doesn't seem too troubled by them

any ideas? can't think of anything that would have caused friction just there - he tends to be dressed in sleepsuits at any rate (so skin only exposed at nappy change times, or pre/post bath)

Might be infected-sometimes Staph aureus which causes impetigo can cause blister type infection.
I'd get an appointment at the GPs this afternoon to check.

definately not chicken pox?

Tutter · 03/12/2007 13:21

I've never heard of random blisters on a wee one. I do think its one for the GP. Or give NHS Direct a call if you are worried in the meantime. Let us know what it is.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 03/12/2007 13:23

unlikely then - it was just with one being in the nappy area that made me think of it. My dd2 had it at around the same age - lots and lots of spots though I think you can have it with one or two - but I've never met anyone who did
Insect bites??

Tutter · 03/12/2007 13:27

DS1 had chicken pox as a baby with only two or three blisters, doctor said they can get it very mildly and he might get it again. He did when he was three.

Also could be impetigo, I would definitely go and check it out.

MrsCarrot · 03/12/2007 16:06

oh, just read you have an appointment.

Anonymama · 03/12/2007 16:19

could be a staphlococcal infection, which could be serious if not attended to. Would require antibiotics. If your GP tries to fob you off with "let's see how it goes for another 24-48hrs", I'd insist on a swab being taken.

Hope things improve.

Tutter · 03/12/2007 17:42

yes it's a bacterial infection, she said "you could call it impetigo" (?)

so, first course of abs at only 4.5mo

Did you say 'well I could call it Algernon - but that won't help me fix it!'

Don't fret about the ab's - he really won't be having them often - better to clear the infection now.

DarrellRivers · 03/12/2007 19:38

Diagnostic internet skills then tiptop.
Polishes halo.
Hope your DS gets better soon.
PS if taking flucloxacillin it really is very bitter so have some milk to hand to swill it down with afterwards.

Tutter · 03/12/2007 20:05

indeed, DR. i did say (apologetically) to my gp that i'd been googling

ah, that would explain ds2's face when i syringed tonight's dose in then [guilt]
