Any dentists?

Evening.
A bit of background: I had two wisdom teeth removed about 2-3 years ago. They were both impacted and causing frequent infection. It was done under LA at the hospital. I now have a 3rd Wisdom which is causing a lot of pain and has been for about 2 weeks now. I've been managing it with painkillers which I've had to take every day. I thought it was probably infected but went to the dentist today and he didn't think so. There's some localised swelling and he said I'd lost some of my bone but didn't recommend antibiotics. He also said unless it gets a lot worse or keeps getting infected he'd not recommend removing it as it would be difficult (It's lying horizontally). My teeth are overcrowded as well. I'm usually fairly good with pain and rarely take painkillers and don't really want to become reliant on them for much longer. He prescribed chlorhexidine gel. I've been using Chlorhexidine mouthwash for the past week and salt water washes which haven't really helped.
Question is, if it's not an infection, surely something else is going on?
It's very tender and red and hurts a lot when I touch it.

Should I just suck it up and hope it gets better or go back if this gel doesn't work. Is there anything else that would make it hurt like this? It's a similar pain level to when my previous ones were infected.

Did the dentist clean it out? What did they actually do other than prescribed some chlorhexidine gel?

Which wisdom tooth is it? And which ones have you had out?

It sounds like pericoronitis which is just inflammation of the gum around the tooth due to food, plaque or calculus build up. It normally doesn't need antibiotics but does need a good clean out by the dentist

Ah, thanks Carrot. He did give it a clean, yes. It's lower right and I've had lower and upper left out.

Sounds reasonable

If it doesn't improve go back. Ultimately if it's had some bone loss and you are having symptoms I'd be thinking about taking it out. You have had the other side out under local, and the younger you are the easier it is to take out. It will probably cause you problems at some point in the future and if it's horizontal it's doing bugger all in your mouth

Thanks Carrot. Still in pain and can't really see any improvement. Still having to take painkillers everyday which has been over two weeks now and longer for the pain. If it's not better by Friday I'll call in again. I've been brushing with Chlorhexidine 1% gel 2x a day and doing lots of salt water washes.
