DS (almost 15) is now on day 3 of not eating hardly anything after sickness bug. Any tips?

DS started to feel sick on Monday evening and vomited throughout the night, was sick throughout Tuesday and had a slight vomit again yesterday. He also had diarrhoea.

Today he’s managed to eat a bit of toast and keep it down, sips of water, sips of Dioralyte. Complained of stomach cramps and aches so I gave him a paracetamol about an hour ago which he’s just thrown up, was acidy water.

Any ideas what else I can give him? Is it just a question of time? I’ve now got a water bottle for his stomach cramps.

How long do you give it before you need to see the GP?

He managed a small rice cracker this morning and half a round of toast for lunch (dry toast) so we thought he was on the road to recovery but there I go adding a paracetamol to the mix and bam, back to being sick.

I'd leave him be, as long as he's taking in fluids.

I'm not a medical professional though, so obviously get proper advice of you're concerned.

Hope he's feeling better soon!

Flat full fat coke is amazing. I've tried remedies but this one is the best in my opinion

A good organic, full sugar lemonade, boiled, as this takes out the fizz and denatures enzymes. Take teaspoons and not gulps of it and the calories will help and it settles the stomach. It’s not unusual to have a period of lactose-intolerance after a bad bug so stay off dairy, especially milk, perhaps for as long as a month. Yoghurt can usually be tolerated much earlier.

This was the advice given by the GP and the HV when my baby and I had a bad dose of Novovirus.

idontgetpaidenoughforthis · 02/09/2021 18:44

I second the full sugar pop, whichever flavour he prefers. Apparently your body goes into ketosis after a stomach bug which turns off the hunger pangs and sugar kickstarts the system again.

MatildaIThink · 02/09/2021 18:54

He should keep drinking water, even if the throws up, do not bother with food until he can reliably keep water down. Ignore the paracetamol for the moment as it irritates the stomach so just increases the liklihood of him being sick.

Keep an eye out for dehydration (the back of the hand test is useful). If he displays any abnormal symptoms phone 111, but keep in mind that these things cane sometimes take a while and make sure you are cleaning everything he touches so the rest of your household does not get the same virus.

ElleOhWell · 02/09/2021 18:59

I’ll be stocking up on full sugar lemonade and cola! See if this works.

@Wavingnotdrown1ng that’s really interesting, boiling the lemonade, I’m definitely going to give this a try!

Then on to the flat coke.

Considering he normally eats me out of house and home, as anyone with a teen will know, he’s eating so little it’s scary but I suppose will aid his recovery better.

@MatildaIThink thank you. I’ve been cleaning everywhere to within an inch of its life and hands, luckily (thanks to Covid) I’ve got loads of hand gel.

Poor buggar. Last week off before school starts too Sad

If he was anything like my husband after a bout a few years ago, he will catch up on food consumption as soon as he can keep it down again!

wendz86 · 02/09/2021 21:58

ice lollies as helps with hydration and refreshing .

ElleOhWell · 03/09/2021 17:36

Right, lemonade going on to boil, ice pops bought.

He’s managed one round of dry toast today, a bit of a rice cracker and water.

Tells me he still feels nauseous and incredibly achy Sad

Told him to have a warm bath for the aches and cramps. Won’t give him any pain killers.

Sickness bug only usually lasts for 48 hours in this house.

Anyone know why some last longer than others?

Gavsicon might help if he's stomach is very acidy. I ended up taking it after noro a few years ago.

ElleOhWell · 03/09/2021 17:47

@QuestionableMouse thank you. Think we have some of the chewable tablets in, although I’m a little wary of trying anything like this since the paracetamol incident.

Stomach bug here started Tuesday and still feeling the effects now

Still no appetite.
It’s just been a surprisingly bad one

QuestionableMouse · 03/09/2021 17:50

Just let him suck it slowly. Should be okay. At this point the stomach acid could be what's making him feel so rubbish.

ElleOhWell · 03/09/2021 17:54

@32inchtv so sorry you’ve got it too Sad like you DS seems to have picked up a pretty bad one, usually is sick on day 1 and recovers quickly, not this time! I hope you feel much better soon Flowers

@QuestionableMouse good point about the acid, might give it a try if the boiled lemonade doesn’t start to help.

Yes definitely try Lemonade/Coke. Whenever I have a stomach bug I am obsessed with Lemonade. At my worst I was drinking and throwing it up but it was far better than retching on an empty stomach.

Ice Lollies are great as well

ISpyCobraKai · 03/09/2021 17:57

I find miso soup helpful.
Most supermarkets these days have it.

ElleOhWell · 03/09/2021 18:11

I have packets of miso soup, good suggestion, can sieve out the bits!

Pop ices are in the freezer ready for when he feels up to one.

Well, the boiled lemonade stayed down - result!

Let’s hope he keeps improving over the weekend, although still very weak and achy bones.

Polos helps my childrens cramps - not sugar free ones! A bit of sugar and the mint defintely settles the pain down
