Bad back sufferers - what do you sit on?

I'm recovering from a slipped disc and sciatica and haven't been able to sit on our low, squishy sofa for over a month now. I'd like to be able to watch a film with the family without having to lie flat on the floor so I'm thinking about getting a more supportive chair. I have no idea what I should be looking for though. Any advice would be appreciated! TIA

I use an IKEA poang, sometimes with the footstool. It's not as cosy as a sofa but it's more supportive.

I'd be interested if you find anything suitable. I find that the seats on most sofas are too deep so I have to pile cushions behind me so my feet can reach the floor.

When my backs bad I put a folded fleece under my seat to raise my pelvis up above my knees and use a breastfeeding pillow for behind my back. For normal chairs I use a wobble cushion all the time.

In our old really low sofa I used to just steal a cushion off another seat Grin

I am suffering really badly at the minute with sciatic pain caused by the collapse of four disc's and waiting for a MRI scan, the only relief I am getting when sitting is in a straight backed chair sitting as straight as I can, you have my sympathy.
To ease the pain I am making sure I walk at least 10 mins every hour and it has given me some relief.

When mine is bad I lie down on the sofa with a blanket under my back to support it. If sitting i put cushions behind my back and sit on a wedge cushion with a coccyx cut out.

Thanks all. I'm wondering about trying this. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/remsta-armchair-tallmyra-dark-green-50484953/

It says it has good lumbar support and I would use cushions for more support. When my back is good enough for me to drive again I might go to IKEA and try it out before buying.

I tried stiff upright chairs for a few years before trying recliners. If I am ok I am half reclined - bad days I am almost lying down. They are not cheap though

That's interesting @allypally999. I hadn't thought of recliners. I'm not sure we'd be able to fit one in our living room but maybe I should look into it.

I have made a purchase yet, but had very helpful conversations with staff in Back In Action in Bristol. They have a website too, and sell all sorts of stuff for coping with bad backs.
