to be honest i would rather deal with the mac nurse she won't try and railroad Steve into hospital as she knows his wishes.
thanks folks

hi OJ only just logged on to here and seen this.Have not yet read whole thread, sorry

My first thoughts since he has been on steroids is that it might be bruising due to this,as steroids can lead to thinning of skin and cause small blood vessels to burst causing bruising.

My second thought is that it could be related to his blood count post chemo.I do not know what he had or when he last had it or the strength but often as I am sure you know the chemotherapy can cause changes in his blood cell count leaving it lower than ususal, not only the white infection fighting cells but the red ones and some of the blood cells that assist clotting (called platelets) can get low and this can cause sudden unexplained bruising, and bleeding.Has he got any kind of purplish spotty rash like bruising on his legs/arms trunk,as well? Was his chemo recent i.e in the last couple of weeks? w.If he has any bleeding ie nosebleed/gums/blood in wee etc,or the bruising gets significantly worse I would contact out of hours service straight away.Otherwise I would keep an eye on him as you plan to overnight. It might be worth giving the ward he goes to a ring too,to see what they suggest,as I have not much knowledge re brain tumours specifically xxx HTH Thinking of you,Wrinkly xx

(Is he on anyother drugs that help prevent clots?Warfarin or fragmin? These could also contribute to him bruising more easily.)

thanks wrinkley he finished chemo just over three weeks ago. he doesn't have any other bruises or marks, he has some discolouration on the sides of his face from the radiotherapy. he is only on steroids and painkillers at the moment. he has a blood test and brain scan on wednesday

Oh OJ {{{{HUGS}}}.I bet you are at your wits end with it all.xxx When did he start with the bruising?Did it come up suddenly?

TBH I would have thought his blood counts would have come back up by now,(though obviously people all differ.)I can see it must be terrible , every new symptom is a worry for you.Its very difficult, especially if Steve is (understandably) adamant he wants to be at home .I would say that if you are concerned overnight contact out of hours immediately.Do you have a district nurse that sees Steve? They work overnight and this could be another contact. They should be able to offer advice.

Hope it all goes well on Wednesday xx

I sometimes get patches which look like a thumb print sized/shaped bruise in the inside coener of my eye. They are common in people on immunosuppression and chemo is like a very high dose chemo HTH It does sound like a drug reaction When I egt them i look terrible but feel fine Is he on steroids?

onlyjoking9329 · 02/12/2007 22:11

yes he is on steroids was on 6mg but dropped today to 4mg

Oh OJ,do you get any sleep at all?It must be so hard.I expect its difficult re the confusion knowing if it COULD be diabetes or if it is related to the tumour.Steroids do a good job but the side effects such as steroid induced diabetes can be yuk.I am surprised that GP has not offered district nurses, even if for a support/pop in type visit.Do you have an out of hours GP service?Re the toilet thing can someone provide you with a urine bottle so it is a bit easier so he doesn't have to struggle to get to the bathroom?I have been known to send them home with our patients on occasion(Don't tell my boss)

onlyjoking9329 · 02/12/2007 23:14

well i do get some sleep but steve often wakes up confused and insists that i check if the postman has been at 2am
Steve won't use a urine bottle or a sick bucket he's a bit stubborn like that
