Really sore tongue?!

Bobholll · 31/08/2021 22:58

I’m really confused by my tongue. For about 6 months, I have had a significantly sore tongue on & off. It comes & goes .. one week it’s fine, one week it’s awful again. It feels like when you get an ulcer on your tongue .. except there isn’t any! Or The area that hurts is a little red but nothing major. There doesn’t physically appear to be anything wrong. But it stings like mad, if I eat sharp foods like an orange, it literally brings tears to my eyes.

It’s driving me mad. Anyone have any clue what this could be? It did start shortly after I had covid.. could this possibly be related? I know there can be covid tongue but I can’t find any reports of ongoing pain/issues..

😩

Try a different toothpaste?

Vitamin B12 deficiency?

ProperVexed · 01/09/2021 06:12

My dentist checks my tongue etc for signs of disease / cancer at every visit. Might be worth getting a dentist to have a look especially as this is persistent.

Woeismethischristmas · 01/09/2021 06:40

I have this. For nearly a year. I also find my tongue is oddly smooth when it’s bad.

Woeismethischristmas · 01/09/2021 06:40

Had a dental checkup recently and dentist didn’t see anything unusual.

Todayisanewday75 · 01/09/2021 06:44

I had this years ago. I realised it had started at the same time I’d started taking a supplement (can’t remember what it was though) and went away as soon as I stopped taking it.

endofthelinefinally · 01/09/2021 06:47

Try oraldene mouth wash for a while. It will deal with any bacterial or fungal infection and won't do any harm.
If that doesn't help, B12 deficiency is worth checking.
It could be related to covid. There are lots of odd things related to after effects of covid, from what I have heard from friends who have had it.
It must be miserable OP.

Burning tongue can be linked to hormones and to anxiety

PARunnerGirl · 01/09/2021 07:13

I have exactly this on and off right now too! Never had it in my life. Citrus, very salty foods (e.g. salt and vinegar crisps) and, at its worst, even hot drinks are unbearable. It is so miserable. Right now it is gone after a bad week or so recently. I asked my dentist a few weeks ago and he could see no sign of anything unusual and was surprised to hear the pain was so bad given there was no visual signs of anything going on.

Following this thread with interest!

Bobholll · 01/09/2021 07:13

Thanks all - I’ve read about burning tongue, it could be I suppose but I’m not remotely anxious or depressed. I thankfully haven’t suffered with my MH in life thankfully!

Thank you for all the suggestions, will have a look trying some! I think I’m due the dentist soon, so that’s handy!

Yes I get this. I find it happens after I eat chocolate.

shamalidacdak · 01/09/2021 07:54

B vitamin deficiency

Caravansforall · 01/09/2021 08:00

It could be something called geographic tongue? Had this start when pregnant and it’s never really cleared completely. Citrus and salty foods trigger it.

LakeFlyPie · 01/09/2021 09:16

I had geographic tongue as a teen (didn't know that's what it was called back then) and have recently had a flare up of it again. I wondered if it was linked to hormones (teen then, peri menopausal now). It's quite painful 😣

Seeline · 01/09/2021 09:21

Can also be a sign of iron deficiency.

Sickasadoggy · 01/09/2021 09:28

I have exactly this too, it’s been for a year or two. I’m being referred to a dental hospital for investigations. I have an auto immune condition so had wondered if it was related to that.
I’ve been fine for a week or so then back to stinging mainly along each side at the back.

Querty123456 · 01/09/2021 22:11

I had this, i had developed an allergy to SLS and it’s really common in toothpastes as it’s a foaming agent. I’d try a swap to a non SLS one if possible.

Swantail · 01/09/2021 22:16

I have this.
Antihistamines really help.
But don't let that prevent you from getting it checked in case it is something more sinister.
You'll learn what food sets it off and in what order even!

I can drink red wine, but red wine after walnuts/ raw fruit is painful! Weird thing!

sugarbrun75 · 05/09/2021 19:39

I have exactly this I'm so glad I found this thread. I've been to dentist twice and back again tomorrow they can't see anything to be concerned about. It's making me absolutely miserable , my tongue feels so uncomfortable and inflamed, just makes me want to sleep. Some days it's there some days it's not x

Sandradale330 · 25/06/2023 22:22

Hi there I know this is an old post but did you ever get to the bottom of the sore tongue. I’m going nuts with mine! It’s constantly there. A horrible taste and zinging.

thecrispfiend · 25/06/2023 22:50

It's often a symptom of low folate. I had this along with pins and needles in my feet. Went to drs who ordered blood tests which came back as low folate. They have prescribed me folic acid tablets which seem to be helping . Worth getting a blood test OP

Sandradale330 · 26/06/2023 08:41

Thank you so much. Can I ask what dosage you were prescribed. I am indeed low in folate but wasn’t given a script just advised to take the normal supplement.

buzzheath · 05/07/2025 20:42

Old thread I know - just wondering if you found an answer, @Bobholll ?

Sandradale330 · 06/07/2025 21:35

Strangely enough it just went quite soon after this post. I can only put it down to a post Covid symptom as I didn’t end up supplementing with vitamins

IggleBiggle · 07/07/2025 05:18

Don't use Colgate. Loads of people get sore mouth with it.
