Painful heel after jumping into pool

My 14 yo DD has a really painful heel, and it doesn’t seem to be getting better. She jumped into a swimming pool last week and it was shallower than she thought and she bashed her heel on the bottom. The pain is better in the morning and worse in the evening, and there is no swelling so I’ve assumed no broken bones, and encouraged her to ice and elevate. But as it isn’t getting better I’m now thinking we should seek some further advice, but not sure the GP will be the most helpful for this. I wondered if we should just call 111 but don’t really want to be sent to A&E! Any thoughts?

Is there a minor injuries unit anywhere near? They're the best place to go with something like this.

She could have fractured her calcaneum. Needs an Xray

Soubriquet · 31/08/2021 16:25

I did that. Twice.

Bloody hurt. Ending up resting it and icing it and it was fine.

If she’d fractured her calcaneum I doubt she’d be able to walk.

You’ll only know from an X-ray.

Thanks everyone - have spoken to 111 and they’ve set up a phone appointment with the GP so we’ll see what they advise. Fingers crossed it isn’t broken - I’d feel terrible as I’ve been telling her it can’t be broken all week!

Hi, coincidentally I've done this exact same thing recently, and I'm the same age as her! I'm having the same exact problems and my mam is recommending going to the A&E, but I don't know if it's worth it. I was just wondering what they said when you went with your daughter as it seems like we have done the exact same thing. I know you posted this near to 3 years ago now so you could possibly not reply, but worth a shot. (Also if anyone else has any information that could help please share).

Hi there. If it continues to be painful then I'd take your mum's advice and go to minor injuries (if there is one where you live) or A&E. if it's fractured you might need treatment.

I’ve just seen this - in the end the GP just advised a watch and wait approach. Quite rightly as it just turned out to be severe bruising and the pain went away after a week or two.
It was a while ago - she’s taking driving lessons now!
