Shortness of breath

Hi everyone, bit of a strange one, but wondering if anyone has experienced this. For the past couple of days I've been struggling to take a lot of air in and I feel like I need to keep taking lots of deep breaths, which takes ages for my body to do. It gives some relief, but then I feel I have to take in more deep breaths? Not sure if that makes sense. It's happening almost constant now

I did a lateral flow test earlier today and it came back negative. I don't suffer from asthma or allergies. I have a slight sniffly nose, but nothing major. Could it be a cold thing? Though I've never had this with a cold before? Apart from that, I don't have any other symptoms and my chest doesn't feel tight or anything and I can still breathe relatively ok, it's just a bit odd Confused

Do you get high blood pressure? Sometimes shortness of breath can be a sign so I believe.
Can you do a pcr?

BippityBoppity87 · 26/08/2021 19:05

I don't have high bp as I get it checked regularly. I'll try and see if I can get a pcr test. Thank you

I felt like this at one time. I am asthmatic but it felt quite different. I went to the GP who did bloods and they found I was anaemic (specifically low ferritin). It went off after I had a course of iron tablets. It’s worth doing a Covid test (GP will ask for that anyway) but if it’s negative, talk to your GP.

iamthesandstorm · 26/08/2021 19:16

i had this with low iron...however i also have it when i get very anxious..its a very common sympton of anxiety.

BG2015 · 26/08/2021 19:47

I've been suffering with this for about 5 weeks, however I am asthmatic.
I'm wondering whether mine is stress related as I'm just going through treatment for cancer.

daysofmuffins · 26/08/2021 19:49

Have you had a vaccine recently? Don't want to scare you but shortness of breath can be related to blood clots, this happened to a relative post vaccine. so definitely phone your GP.

BippityBoppity87 · 26/08/2021 19:58

@daysofmuffins I had my second vaccine on the 5th of June and have been completely fine since. Can clots form even now? It's just the past couple of days

I will get a pcr ASAP, just so I can rule it out. I'm pretty confident that's not the problem, but understand a health care professional probably won't see me until I've had one done

Lateral flow didn't pick up my Covid, only a PCR did. I would recommend getting a PCR test done

RiverSkater · 26/08/2021 19:59

Are you anxious, it could be hyperventilation syndrome.

daysofmuffins · 26/08/2021 21:57

@BippityBoppity87 they say they are meant to happen within 4 weeks, but with my relative it was a couple of months after. They couldn't rule out it not being vaccine related but also it could have been something else. However I would just say get checked, as blood clots can occur, vaccines or not - naturally also. And this is a symptom.

backtoworkasamrs · 26/08/2021 22:09

Lateral flow didn't show as a positive for me but PCR did - only symptom I had was shortness of breath

WaterIsBest · 26/08/2021 22:10

No-one can help you here

Get a Oxy meter and see a doctor

BippityBoppity87 · 27/08/2021 13:57

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will try and get a covid test either today or tomorrow and if it's negative I'll ring the gp on Monday, as I doubt they'll probably see me anyway without a negative covid test

I'm wondering if it could be anaemia now, as I'm incredibly forgetful, worse than usual. I also have ADHD and on meds for that, but it's been absolutely shocking recently. I'm scared to cook anything if my DP isn't here in case I burn the house down. So not sure if it's maybe connected

@BippityBoppity87

OLD THREAD ALERT

OP I know this is an old thread but just wondering if you found anything? I came across your thread while trying to find an old one I started with similar symptoms!

CreatingHavoc · 13/08/2023 11:51

Bizarrely I also have a similar thing atm and got fully checked out at A&E yesterday as I thought something was majorly wrong. Keep getting really out of breath doing normal stuff, which causes racing heart and have a really tight chest. Dr's found nothing wrong though (which I'm very thankful for as there was girl next to me with a blood clot in her lung 😳).

I think it's a mix of low iron, stress, reflux and viral illness for me personally.

OutInOutIn · 13/08/2023 12:07

I had a thread about shortness of breath in 2019. I got fitter since then and assumed it was to do with that, but no, I'm back exactly where I was - just annoying but not debilitating shortness of breath first thing in the mornings and on and off.
Last winter I went to A&E for racing heart that kept up for several days - got told it was anxiety which I'm not sure I agree with. This time around I don't have the racing heart but do have this annoying sort of sniffly shortness of breath. I've had a couple of colds, perhaps mild allergies, but can't seem to shift this.

Have had quick ECG and GP listened to my chest - all fine. Got a prescription for an asthma inhaler to use if I felt I needed it and that would also test if it helped (in which case it could be asthma, which I've never knowingly had).

It's hard to know what to do when it's your heart and breathing, isn't it @CreatingHavoc ! I'm assured by the fact I haven't keeled over at any point. When exercising at the moment I need to take more frequent breaks to get my breath back and it's not even hardcore cardio.

CreatingHavoc · 13/08/2023 12:32

@OutInOutIn I know, it's really disconcerting. Think I'm going to go to the gp tomorrow and see if I can get an inhaler myself. Getting a bit fed up of it!
