Breast Cyst

Hi there,

I'm not quite sure why I'm posting but I need to say or write something. Had a mammogram earlier today as one breast which has always been slightly bigger has been bothering me recently. No lumps felt by my GP or the Consultant I met before the mammogram. GP and Consultant both said they believed both breasts to be normal just a bit different from each other which isn't uncommon. Anyway, came home today happy enough until I had a call a short while ago to say that it looked like there were small benign cysts in both breasts and I've to go back next Monday for an ultrasound to confirm. I will also meet the consultant after the ultrasound so I will know there and then I think if it definitely is just cysts. I have now completely spiralled as my dh is out this evening and the kids are going mental here, almost like they know something is wrong. I really don't know why I'm posting, I guess I'm hoping others may have experienced something similar and can talk me down. It's going to be a long week ☹️

Don’t panic, it’s very common. My pal was there for multiple scans (four scans each breast I think) as they tried to work out what they were.

She was there for hours and crying as she thought they must have found something. She was practically writing her will. They reassured her that the pictures were just blurry and they wanted to get good ones to check properly. She was about up in the ceiling freaking out by then.

It’s very normal to get these call backs so try and stay calm. I know it’s not easy but there’s no point in stressing out. It will very likely be fine and it will be a relief to be told it’s all ok.

What I do know is that they will not have told you it’s likely to be cysts if they have even the slightest suspicion that it’s anything else. Easier said than done but please don’t worry. They’re going through the process and an ultrasound is likely to give them the opportunity to aspirate them if they think it’s worth it. You will worry but honestly it’s incredibly stressful but almost certainly nothing to be concerned about

Houserenoqueen · 23/08/2021 20:27

Agree with pp. They wouldn’t have said it’s likely to be benign cysts if there is a chance it’s not.
I had lumps/ ultrasound and then biopsy earlier this year and convinced myself I had cancer. I should have listened to the consultant saying it was most likely not to be due to my age/ no lumps in armpits, but I spiralled into a panic.
Good luck next week, but remember what the dr said!

Thank you so much for the replies, I'm trying to just come down from the initial shock. I've only told my sister and my husband in real life as I didn't think there would really be anything but I still wanted to be able to talk about it. My sister is working tonight and it's the one night my husband has a match every week on his way home from work. I kind of figured the nurse wouldn't have said benign cysts on the phone if they weren't fairly sure that's what they are. I figured they'd say something more like we've seen something we want to follow up on or even something suspicious. Eugh it's going to be a long week. Think I'm going to have to allow myself tonight to freak out then put it out of my head.

I think you’re right re nurses explanation. She said that to keep you calm so you wouldn’t worry.

There’s no reason to worry. They are just being extra cautious. If they thought it was something really bad and they were hiding it from you, you’d surely have been called back sooner than next week. You can relax. It’s all ok.

LordFoofingtonismyMaster · 23/08/2021 20:51

Thank you so much. I'm replaying the conversation in my head and the first option I was given to wait for an appointment in the outpatient clinic which can take weeks or to come back into the clinic and have it done privately next week if I wanted it done sooner so I think you're right I'd have been asked to come in sooner as opposed to given an option to wait weeks and only given the other option when I said oh god weeks.

I'm in Ireland btw in case this sounds different to a standard UK approach.

The fact she stressed benign cysts suggests that she is doing absolutely everything she can to reassure you. They don’t do that if they don’t mean it!!

PlatinumBrunette · 23/08/2021 21:11

Aww please don't fret. Cysts are very obvious from their shape and density. I have/had many (something called polycystic breast something or other). Sometimes mine get infected - lovely 🙄 They get drained very easily and quickly.

LordFoofingtonismyMaster · 23/08/2021 22:55

Thanks again for the responses. I know nobody in cyber world can tell me for sure but to hear other experiences and get some reassurance is really appreciated.

I’ve had breast cancer and many cysts. Cysts are very distinctive in shape and density. If you have been told that they are cysts, it is vanishingly unlikely that they are anything else.

Thank you very much for your response. I hope you are doing well. Yes she said small benign cysts in both breasts. A lot of the call was a blur but that part I remember.
