I found a painful lump in my breast just over 3 weeks ago, I thought I would wait till my period started the following week to see it went, the pain went about 2 days after my period started but the lump was still there, but now it's been hurting again the past week, phoned the Dr today and I have an appointment Wednesday. I'm absolutely terrified. I'm only 29 and a have a little toddler :( anyone had anything similar which turned out to be nothing? Xx

I hope when you see the Dr on Wednesday they can put your mind at rest that it isn’t anything concerning.

I have a couple of friends who have had worries about lumps, mid 40’s, but thankfully they turned out to be nothing concerning, one was even referred for early mammogram due to her family history but all was well.

Sorry you are going through all this worry, I hope it will turn out to be nothing sinister Flowers

WitchBaby · 23/08/2021 21:03

It'll probably be a cyst or something, try not to worry Thanks

Haggisfish3 · 23/08/2021 21:04

Dm had several of these and they were cysts.

GoodnightGrandma · 23/08/2021 21:06

Yep, I’ve got a fibroadenoma. Gets painful before my period. Also gets sore if I poke at it.

Standrewsschool · 23/08/2021 21:11

Hand -holding from afar.

Don’t be surprised if you get referred - breast referrals usually come under the two week wait, so you may see a hospital consultant fairly quickly. They can refer whether they think it’s a cyst or something more sinister.

Fortunately, breast cancer clinics are good under the nhs. You may have a mammogram or ultrasound fairly quickly, maybe even the same day. They May do an mri as you are young, and mammograms don’t always work on the young.

Hopefully it’s a cyst, which they can drain straight away.

Wanted you to know that, if you do get a referral, it’s done as much to eliminate breast cancer, as well as to confirm it, so try not to worry (easier said than done).

Bit of advice, wear loose clothing!

Thank you all for your reassurance, it is much appreciated xx

Let us know how you get on on Wednesday, OP.
Good luck 🤞

Puddingnpie · 24/08/2021 19:32

Positively, cancer lumps don’t usually hurt. More likely to be a cyst/fibroadenoma. If you see GP, you may well be referred on the 2 week pathway - don’t let this alarm you as it is standard practice for breast changes as recommended by NICE. 90% of lumps seen are benign.

opmamatrist · 24/08/2021 20:23

Thank you all xx

Being referred down the two week pathway, the gp felt a hard and fixed lump, I'm so scared :(

OP posts:
Elieza · 25/08/2021 09:37

It is scary and the wait for the appointment feels like forever.

Until they have a good look you won’t know what it is.

I had a hard lump on my knee for years. It was like a pea. I couldn’t kneel on it. But turned out it was nothing to worry about.

So try and stay positive. The nhs is ‘open for business’ again, thank God, so whatever it is will be sorted.

Dippydinosaurus · 25/08/2021 10:16

I had a lump and was referred to the breast clinic. Turned out to be a duct blockage. I was also referred within two weeks. Try not to worry as it's much much more likely to be a cyst. Can you take someone with you? You may have an ultrasound first then, if needed, a mammogram

bloodywhitecat · 25/08/2021 10:20

Last time I attended breast clinic (I have lots of lumps) there was a poster on the wall saying that something like 97% of lumps are innocent. It is highly likely that your lump is innocent too.

Wilmaa · 25/08/2021 10:20

Hey op,

I've been referred twice due to finding lumps, I'm the same age as you and this was couple years ago.

Turned out to be a cyst for the first one and second one was a blocked duct!

I had ultrasound and was in and out in ten minutes!

backtoworkasamrs · 25/08/2021 10:34

@opmamatrist
I know it must be really worrying for you but 90% of referrals through this pathway turn out to be benign.

opmamatrist · 25/08/2021 10:41

Thank you so much for the reassurance everyone, means a lot xx

Something that really reassured me when in the same position as you (ie waiting on the 2week pathway) was a poster who said even if cancer, breast is one of the easier ones to treat. I did have cancer but successfully treated and almost a distant memory (2 years). Virtual hug to you

Redannie118 · 25/08/2021 19:46

Another one saying painful is a good sign. My cancerous lump was totally painless, almost numb. Best of luck x

steppingcarefully · 26/08/2021 08:02

I have recently been treated for breast cancer. Please be reassured that 3 out of 4 women referred to the breast clinic are benign lumps. However if it does turn out that you have a cancerous lump you will be treated swiftly and efficiently with the greatest of care. I found all of the staff in the breast clinics I attended the most kind and caring people I have ever met. The waiting for appts and results is the worst. Once you know what you’re dealing with you can focus on your treatment. I sincerely hope yours is a fibroadenoma or something similar but also please remember that breast cancer is one of the most successful cancers treatment wise. Good luck and take care.

MrsMaiselsRedCoat · 26/08/2021 09:29

I really feel for you, this happened to me 3 times in my 30s. Each time it was nothing to worry about and everyone I came into contact with was absolutely lovely and very reassuring. Apparently I had lumpy breasts which is pretty common. I had one particular lump of glandular tissue which would swell up and ache before my period then it would shrink for a few weeks. It was still there though and used to worry me. I was able to relax about it when they did a biopsy which showed it was nothing to worry about.

A lovely consultant told me not to worry about anything until she told me there was actually something to worry about. And there never was anything.

Please remember that even if it is something sinister the treatments available for breast cancer are so good now, I know a couple of women who went through it and made a full recovery. It was a tough year but they are completely back to normal now.

Wishing you the best of luck x

opmamatrist · 26/08/2021 10:13

Thank you all for your replies, I have my appointment on the 8th, it is going to be a horrible wait :(

OP posts:
WitchBaby · 26/08/2021 10:44

The waiting is the worst bit.
Fingers crossed for you OP, I'm sure you will be fine 🤞

marmiteloversunite · 26/08/2021 16:11

On a practical note, they often get you to change into a cape sort of thing so don't wear a dress to the appointment. Best wishes.
