Just found out my mum needs a hip replacement tomorrow after a bad fall today. Has anyone had one? Wondering what we can get her to help her recovery when shes home.

I'm sorry to hear about your mum and I hope all goes well with her surgery.

From family member experience of a hip replacement, the hospital provided extra support equipment after the operation. Things like a high stool with arms, toilet seat, thingy to help getting socks on.

The physiotherapist will give advice on how to get around house, up and down stairs, bathing etc. At first she will be using either a frame or crutches to get around so a shoulder bag to help carry bits and pieces from room to room would be useful.

Thank you so much thats a big help.

The hospital should arrange help before discharge. Carers came in for my mum for 6 weeks to help her learn to get about they did come 3 times a day. She will also have someone daily to administer an anti clotting medication. Usually the clips come out on day 10.
They should have a liason with the discharge team to help sort all equipment out. She should get things like a zimmer frame and a commode and they can also provide blocks to raise your current furniture to the correct level.

One of those long grabber things are super helpful so she won't have to bend to pick things up from lower down

Very sorry to hear about your mum, OP. One thing that happened with my dad (85): Depending on how old she is, you may find the general anaesthetic knocks her a bit and she may not be quite herself for a while.

Oh yeh good idea will get one of those. Thank you.

It's good to keep moving after a hip replacement, so they'll be keen to get her up soon. However, once at home it's almost impossible to carry a hot drink and use a frame, so a flask that she is able to put in a bag (cross body or attached to a frame) is good. Make sure she can open the flask as some are quite tough.

Thanks some really good advice. A flask is a great idea.

If she has sticks not crutches get wrists straps for the sticks so you don’t drop them and they can sort of dangle when you are doing things.
