POST-NATAL HAIR LOSS - WHEN DOES IT STOP??

PinkPussyCat · 30/11/2007 21:43

Ds is now 5 months old and my hair is still coming out by the handful every time I brush it/have a shower. I had this last year as well, following a miscarriage, but presumably it stopped pretty quickly at that time because I got pregnant with ds soon after. It's not patchy or anything, just getting thinner by the day. Does anyone else have experience of this?

bump[dont know sorry]

yummers · 30/11/2007 23:08

sorry, i'm not sure either. i'm guessing it varies with each individual's hormone levels etc? GP might be the best first port of call.. also, i'm gonna sound like a raving hippy but personally speaking i find doing lots of yoga seems to help my hair - maybe i'm just imagining it, but i think the inversion postures where your heart is higher than your head are supposed to be good for blood circulatiion in that part of the body (?) obviously consult your doctor first etc, and it could just be me imagining things, wishful thinking re my own thin-ish hair.

CairoFi · 01/12/2007 07:47

I have EXACTLY the same thing!!! My baby is 5 and a half months and it just comes out in handfuls!!! I have bought some vitamins and I'm heading to the hairdressers today to get it trimmed. If it's still dodgy, I'm off to the Dr's later in the week.
It seems to be very dry and snapping off but some of it is also coming out at the roots!

My baby is 8.5 months now and if I lift my fringe there is a whole other short hairdo going on and along my parting you can see my new hairgrowth sticking up. This is my fourth baby and happens everytime. So if you are like me your hair will start to grow again soon.

IsawBUMPERkissingsantaclaus · 01/12/2007 08:27

Still going on here at 5 months, but nots as bad as it was.

PinkPussyCat · 01/12/2007 08:36

Thank you! At least I am not alone I guess... I had blood taken by the GP (when this happened first time around) as he thought it could be due to a thyroid problem. Everything came back normal so it was put down to hormonal changes. Rosylily - I too have that 'whole other hairdo' thing going on around my hairline! At least there is re-growth I suppose.... Just wish the rest of it would stop coming out!

Mine started at 4 months and is still coming out!!! My hairdresser told me not to worry - that my hair didn't fall out while I was pregnant - and this is just that hair now coming out! There might be some truth in that because I did have amazingly thick hair when I was pregnant and it didn't come out when I washed it! However - it looks like I am now heading back to thin frizzy hair again

PinkPussyCat · 01/12/2007 08:40

Hi meep! Yes there is something about your 'normal' hair loss stopping during pregnancy, then the stuff that should have come out all comes out at once afterwards...or something! How old is mini meep now?

OP posts:
meep · 01/12/2007 08:44

Hi PPC! Mini meep is now 5 months - as my hair goes hers slowly appears!!! I scared my DH once by throwing a large ball of hair into the loo after I'd had a shower and forgetting to flush it away - think he thought it was some ridiculously hairy spider!

PinkPussyCat · 01/12/2007 08:47

LOL - I chuck mine down the loo as well! which dh can't fathom at all! Hopefully we won't all end up as bald as coots... it's quite unnerving at times!

I ran my hands over the carpet where I dry my hair - and came up with a hair ball that could rival any birds nest (my housework skills are not the best!)- I even found one of my hairs in DD's nappy!!!

PinkPussyCat · 01/12/2007 09:30

DS + i went to the cinema the other day (they have a 'bring a baby' showing!) and when I stood up at the end my hair was all over the back of the seat, but I think the worst thing is finding them stuck to ds. I am forever picking them off him and he occasionally has one wrapped round his fingers. I'm terrified he is going to start ingesting them/coughing up hairballs! Thank god for Dysons

My hair was falling out after baby#2 till she was nearly 1. It started growing back as bum fluff, and only now, 6 months on, does it resemble more-or-less the rest of the hair on my head.

meep · 01/12/2007 09:39

With you on the hair wrapped around little fingers! I am considering the new Dyson dustbuster thingie for Christmas! D'you think we can Dyson our babies to save them from the attack from our hair?

PinkPussyCat · 01/12/2007 09:45

meep, I have seriously considered this!
HBB - @ 'bum fluff'!

OP posts:
meep · 01/12/2007 09:51

I suppose bum fluff means that at least there's some new stuff growing in (trying to feel positive here!). So - I'm going to have to go back to work with a spare tyre round my middle (nothing to do with cake of course) and a bald bum fluffy head!!! Lovely!

PinkPussyCatInAPearTree · 01/12/2007 09:55

We will be gorgeous!
(turned festive just now!)

CairoFi · 01/12/2007 18:39

Hi!

OK, so I went to the Dr's today and he says DON'T WORRY!!! He also said that when I stop breast feeding he can give me some injections to make it grow back really thick!

Fi x.

IsawBUMPERkissingsantaclaus · 02/12/2007 11:05

ooh really? What sort of injections? Can he also give injections to plum p up saggy boobs?

IsawBUMPERkissingsantaclaus · 02/12/2007 11:11

PPC just read your post. I have to keep picking the hairs of DD, it's gross.

My friend told me that if you ring NHS direct about a crying baby they ask you to check your baby's fingers as it's a very common thing for babies to get hairs wrapped around their fingers.

PinkPussyCatInAPearTree · 02/12/2007 11:40

Hi Fi + Bumper!

Fi - tell me more about this injection? Do you have to be snooker-ball bald to get it?
Sounds like something you would need to get privately

weewishyouamerryonion · 02/12/2007 11:48
