Ds has a tooth that direcetly grows out of his gum
. He was v embarassed in his teens when he told us about it and didnt go dentist whislt at uni.
Now he is facing the fact that this affects his confidence. His dentist says that the extraction under ga and a crown to the other tooth will cost 10 k in england and has advised him to go to a private clinic of his choice in turkey and that it will cost 3 k there.
I would have thought that the nhs could do the surgical aspect of this procedure? And then pay private for the crown?
I dont want him to make the wrong choice. We will pay but we can only pay once.. so we need to support him to.make.the right.choice.
I realise nhs work invole a long wait and its affecting confidence so happy to.pay.but it has tobe good. Any advice please ?! Thankyou.

Whatever you do, do not go to Turkey! Go to another dentist in the Uk and get another opinion because your dentist sounds dodgy as hell. If your dentist can't do it they'll refer you to the nearest dental hospital. I work in one and we see referrals like this all the time

Tiddleandplonk · 21/08/2021 21:22

He has not been able to even see a dentist in rhe uk due to covid. He cant register with one in hos city it seems . He has rang up.and they say are you in pain.. whwn he says no he is told he cant be seen unless its emwegency

Please can u advisw me..?
Does he need to gp to hos gp to get a referal to get a referral please ?. He cant even acess a dentist so cd gp refer ?

It is massivley knock his confididence as he cant ask girls out etc.

What is rhw issue re turkey please . Id be worried about aftercare.

A GP won't refer him to a dental hospital. If he's near one he can ask to register with students but his best bet may be to find a private dentist for now. It will not cost 10K

Ilovecoffee2 · 21/08/2021 22:41

So do you mean the baby tooth is still present and the adult tooth has come out in front or behind it? Like he has double teeth?

Mischance · 21/08/2021 22:51

I have had 4 dental appointments during the pandemic - indeed I had a root canal filling yesterday. So there are dentists who are and have been working.

My DD had something similar - an upper tooth growing in the roof of her mouth (bizarrely sideways). She was offered the most extraordinary treatment which involved taking out the baby tooth and wearing some sort of spring attachment that would drag it into place (very slowly). I sought a second opinion and instead she had the second tooth removed from the roof of her mouth and lived with the baby tooth, which is still there - she is now 39 and has had no problems.

I was wondering this. Is he trying to register as an nhs patient.? If so, it’s nationally known that it’s pretty impossible at the moment. I bet if he asks to register as a private patient he’ll find he has more options (I found myself in the same situation and the change was noticeable). Yes, there are differences in the price structure, some large but others not too much in it. I have had extensive private work on my teeth and no where near £10k. What he needs is a second opinion, as a private patient in a different practice. You’d have to drag me unconscious to have it done abroad. Bless him, I really do know that feeling.
Tiddleandplonk · 21/08/2021 23:01

So he can to a dentist as a private patient? What would happen then ? Do you mean that they could refer him.to.the dental hospital. He needs a tooth cut out of rhe gum.and somw sort of crown or.implanr ovwe baby tooth. .wd 3 k do.it ? Its surgery under ga.
My main concern is finding a dentist who will so.it or refer him.
DO dentists do such surgery please.
He is so desperate.

Anyone can register as a private patient. Dentists can and do refer patients to a dental surgeon if necessary. Research dental practices in his area, select one that looks like the best fit, phone and ask to register as a private patient and take it from there. I don’t know how much the procedure will cost but I do know if they can avoid ga they will, he may not even need a ga. My dentist exhausts all other options first, like sedation.
Tiddleandplonk · 21/08/2021 23:32

Thankyou . So what you seem ro be saying is that we may be able to either get a quote for extracrion( he did see emeegency dentist here when he lived with us during a lockdown period.. they looked at same time and said ga.) OR a private dentist could refer to dental hospital ? We are very keen and happy to.pay if can afford it so I hope that if they cant do.the treatment themselves then they could refer.
My concern is would rhw private dentist not see that we were only register as private to.access a referal.? Doesnt that look.bad? Also , if they dont refer him to.hospital am worried.we cant afford it.
Well i guess at least we would kmow if we cant afford it . .. but if that option closed off id we cdnt pay and they dont reffer him.we would indeed then have to go abroad??
Thank you all . Am so.wanting to help and i guess a private consultation would be rhe beginning .

Most dentists are private now - NHS places are like hen's teeth!

My DD saw two private dentists (as we sought a second opinion) and the second referred her to have the adult tooth removed from the roof of her mouth. This was done in NHS hospital under a GA, as the tooth had to be excised rather than just pulled out. She had stitches afterwards - it was painful for a few days, but then settled.

The baby tooth is still happily in place as there was no adult tooth to push it out. I told her from day one that we would pay for an implant for her if the baby tooth failed, but all has been well; and cosmetically it looks fine.

Tiddleandplonk · 22/08/2021 10:28

Thanks all . It is called an eptopic cannie or pacted canine
.Mischance was the private dentist able tp.refer your dd to an nhs hospital to have that surgery under the nhs? That sounds like a plan if that is the case! Thanks !

Dentist here, get himself booked in with a private dentist for a check up. They can advise on his options.
If a tooth needed to be taken out that is impacted he can be referred for NHS treatment at a hospital.
The costs sound all wrong. An online consultation for dentistry is pretty impossible, we'd normally assess with xrays. His baby tooth might be unsuitable to veneer/crown they're not designed to last into adulthood and sometimes the roots dissolve away so they're advising on things that haven't been fully assessed.
The costs he's been given are astronomical for that much he could get a private general anaesthetic tooth removal, braces and almost pay for an implant. The only way he'll find out is start with an initial consultation. Finding an NHS appointment as a new patient in England at the moment is pretty rare (they only ever commissioned NHS dental services for 55% percent of the population and we're working at a lower capacity as we have to follow protocols set by NHS England and we have a huge backlog of our patients we haven't yet seen) so tell him to just book privatley.

TheQueef · 22/08/2021 11:43

First job is to get on some wait lists for an NHS place, around me they vary from 24 months to six months.
While he waits for a place he can book a private check up (should be under £100) and request a referral for extraction under GA (if that's what he wants)
He needs to get on some lists asap.

Mischance · 22/08/2021 11:44

Yes - the private dentist referred her to the NHS for the surgery. She was under 18 at the time so I cannot be sure whether the rules are the same for adults.

She has been lucky in that the root of the baby tooth seems to be fine and has not dissolved. She knows I will pay for an implant if it gives up the ghost. I made that promise quite a few years ago! - but I will honour it.

Good luck with getting yours sorted.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 22/08/2021 11:49

10k, you are having a laugh!!! I've had 2 whole dental implants for 2.5k here:

www.brightonimplantclinic.co.uk/pricing/

I drive down to this clinic from Somerset for the day to have treatment as they are excellent and there prices similar to European prices. Take a look at their price list.

The people you spoke too are really taking the piss. My son had a whole thrid set of teeth growing out of his top gum and had all of them removed by the NHS very easily, his 2nd set remained where they were.

l2b2 · 22/08/2021 12:02

What @MillyMollyMardy says.
Also, I'm staggered any UK practising dentist would advise treatment in Turkey.

Tiddleandplonk · 22/08/2021 14:41

It was my mishearing . He had an' online consultation ' . He said turkey sends client to a british ( hospital ?) For x rays ,bite etc then they fly to turkey for the actual treatment.

OP posts:
MillyMollyMardy · 22/08/2021 15:03

So the consultation was with a Turkish dentist who was upselling the Turkish Clinic.
If he's going to go down this route he needs to ensure that the dentist he is consulting with is licenced with the GDC. If you goes down the treatment in Turkey he needs to be aware there is usually no help available in the UK if he experiences complications unless the Turkish Clinic has a UK Clinic.
Already he is being told things that seem inaccurate so please ask him to be cautious and at least get a face to face second opinion.

Taking the tooth out and keeping the baby tooth is not the only option. If the tooth is visible in his mouth it may be possible to bring it into line with braces- this is not a quick fix but will give great aesthetics and minimise the need for any further treatment later.
