Really struggling with CPAP machine

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 21/08/2021 13:15

I have to use it because I am a whisker away from losing my driving licence and I'm being monitored via my machine.
I've lost nearly all of the weight so I've done what I can but every night I stop breathing completely at least twice and wake up feeling like I've been waterboarded when my machine revs up to revive me.
In the morning my teeth ache, I've got an awful headache and a really sore throat.
The nasal cushion I use is just fine and comfortable but the rush of incoming air when I stop breathing is crazy.
Has anyone ever had successful surgery to cure sleep apnoea and was it a success?

If you get a dry mouth have you tried xylimelts? My dh uses then plus a humidifier attachment on the cpap machine

Don't know about surgery, sorry

Someone I knew had surgery and it was apparently very painful and took a long time to heal. He was later told by another consultant that surgery was rarely effective and quite often the soft palate seems to grow back.

It sounds like you need to go back to your sleep clinic and get their advice. If you still have apnoeas they may be able to change the settings. They may also be able to help with humidification. CPAP machines don’t ‘revive’ you - they splint the airway open so you don’t obstruct. If you have a BIPAP machine then that is slightly different to CPAP.

Interesting, something is going on in the night because it wakes me up but of course I don't know what because I'm asleep. I'll try the xylimelts thanks.
Got another appointment in 5 weeks so we'll see what they say.

Has your machine got a humidifier? If your mouth is dry and you aren't getting good control, then its possible your mouth is opening and so you need a full face mask. Can you see your stats on your phone? Dhs current APAP has an app so he can see apnoeas, mask leakage, pressure etc

You shouldn't be getting sleep apnoea episodes if you are using a CPAP machine. It sounds like the mask isn't fitting correctly and there is leakage of air.

I have an APAP machine for a different reason but if you're finding it difficult to breathe against the forced air that a CPAP forces out, you might find APAP a game changer as you don't have any air to breathe against. Hard to explain. It also sounds like you might have condensation in the hose, I use a snuggly hose cover to try and stop this. I can't tolerate humidifiers.
