It’s a long story but I have developed colitis as a side effect of medication I’ve been taking. Was also tested for C difficile (which I have had before) but that came back negative

It’s been extremely painful and resulted in pretty explosive and uncontrollable diarrhoea; after about a week of stopping the medication the pain has all but gone and the frequency and urgency is a lot better but it is now more than three weeks and I still have watery diarrhoea and can’t really go anywhere where I won’t have fairly quickly access to a toilet. Occasional cramps and I feel really weak and tired.

I did the BRAT diet on the advice of the GP for a few days but have since been advised to look at low FODMAP, which doesn’t quite tally. And I am so very bored of bland food. I’m drinking Yakult and have started with gut friendly bacteria capsules but other than that I really don’t know what to do.

Has anyone had this as an effect of medication, and how long did it last? What else can I do? It’s really debilitating (and quite disgusting really) - I usually have a cast iron system and love strong and hot foods so I’m desperate to get it all back. Any advice gratefully received!

Try the liquid prebiotic 'Symprove' - recommended to me by an NHS specialist dietician, it has literally transformed my life. I was super underweight and could eat about eight things before I started on it; now I am able to have a pretty normal diet again. It's expensive but worth every penny. (No affiliation, just very, very happy with what it's done for me.)

@Professorinkling, I'm now challenging myself to think of a meal or two that are simultaneously IBD-AID, low FODMAP, low fat and vegan at the same time, for the mythical dinner part I'll never have where everyone's got a different dietary need!

So far I've got ratatouille and scrambled tofu.

How are you today, @OP?

@lgina

Sorry if I missed it but what was the suspected culprit med OP?
It was Lansoprazole, prescribed to mitigate side effects of Naproxen (I didn’t have any side effects from that, but still…)

I actually feel ok this morning thank you @SpindleWhorl so I am keen to capitalise on that and get myself into a programme of eating only those ultra-safe foods that won’t have any impacts. I’ll be hitting Tesco at 10am armed with all these ideas and info!
