Supplements to improve memory

Anyone found anything that they eat or supplements they have taken that improve memory. Or exercise of one type or another. I'm trying to resist the wonder pills available online that are claimed to improve recall etc - I eat a varied diet and don't drink a lot or smoke, and take exercise. Do I have to resign myself to my fading memory being due to ageing - I'm 71.

Following!

can't find it now but there was a study about 10 years ago that looked at cycling & memory.
the finding was that regular cycling benefits the brain a lot.

RichTeaTime · 17/08/2021 12:29

Oh, thanks. I actually have an electric bike - though probably don't peddle as hard with that - will try to find the study.

Ginkgo biloba supplements are claimed to help brain function, but probably unproven.

Newestname001 · 17/08/2021 13:21

I'm no expert so do please do your own research but I'd heard Vitamin B complex, especially Vit.B12 is good for slowing memory loss.

A quick google found this:

Good luck! 🌹

I was hoping someone might post with some suggestions of what worked for them. I think I'd give that more weight than the very many wonder supplements advertised online.

Yes, cycling does seem to be put forward as improving brain health.

Though I suspect any intensive exercise would make a difference done regularly.

As another poster said vitamin B complex, particularly B1 and B12

Egghead68 · 17/08/2021 17:20

Make sure you are not deficient in B vits, iron.

A Mediterranean diet may help a little.

Regular exercise, keeping BP and any diabetes well controlled are important.

Getting treatment for any hearing loss, depression/anxiety/insomnia.

Keeping your brain active by learning a language or an instrument.

Staying socially active.

Memory does get worse with age. If you notice other problems as well, e.g. getting lost, problems getting dressed, problems handling money, cooking etc. then that’s more concerning.

There’s a good book called “Where did I leave my glasses?”

EdinburghLights · 17/08/2021 17:29

Magnesium, Zinc and Calcium I think help, plus D and B vits.

RichTeaTime · 17/08/2021 18:08

Thanks, that book looks ideal - informative and, hopefully, reassuring!

Lion's mane is taken by lots of bright young things now .And I've seen recent mention on the cancer thread ,It's a mushroom I think .

quinin · 17/08/2021 19:08

I brought Reishi mushroom extract for a relative that's been potentially being diagnosed with early onset dementia and her symptoms have really reduced.

Spiindoctor · 20/09/2021 07:19

I posted this a month ago under a different username. I thought I'd post a bit of info I've found.
Thanks for the suggestions above.

Also wanted to say that I stopped drinking wine at the time I posted and would say that my memory improved immediately. I'm 70 years old and I suppose that what you could get away with when young eventually catches up with you. I used to have a glass of wine or two about 4-5 nights a week.
Having read up a bit I have also upped vit B12 and vit D and increased the amounts as I think your older system doesn't absorb as much nutrients as in the past.
I found the attached list on a webpage about the Bredesen's protocol and others might be interested.

I was periodically sent a timed quiz to do that checked memory/reaction times & asked about diet & lifestyle.

It gave me an amber brain (memory?lol ) score after the first time and said to increase oily fish & omega 3 in my diet. Several months later when I was rechecked it gave me a green result.

Spiindoctor · 20/09/2021 16:37

Yes, the stuff I read online to postpone alzheimers demand high doses of the supplements. The ones I was taking weren't enough.

jeffersonsam · 21/09/2021 12:52

Some of the natural food items will surely improving memory power, at the same time your age is 71, so my small suggestion is you should please seek doctor advice. It may be helps to improving your memory power and your body health in the coming days.

TinctureThis · 21/09/2021 13:10

No need to pay for expensive supplements.
Grow a rosemary plant and read up on how to use it for memory.

Spiindoctor · 21/09/2021 13:38

Doctor's not interested. I think you need to be at the level of needing a dementia test before they do anything.

Whentheydontmeanwhattheysay · 22/09/2021 17:19

Our Drs would do blood tests if a patient said they had concerns about their memory. There are lots of treatable things that can cause memory loss such as:
Thyroid issues
Vitamin D deficiency
B12/folate deficiency
Low ferritin.

Spiindoctor · 23/09/2021 06:42

I have rosemary in the garden. Will look into that.
I have started taking zinc, vit B12, vit D. Don't think I need iron.
