Lipoma removal.

I have a large lipoma on my back. Between my shoulder blade and spine. It's got bigger and getting pretty uncomfortable. I called my doctors this morning expecting to be told they wouldnt do anything with it however due to the size she's referred me to have it removed. Has anyone had one removed? Mine is probably the size of an orange. Im wondering if it'll be local or general anesthetic. I've never had any type of operation before.

If you watch Dr pimple popper or Skin A&E then they often just use local anaesthetic.

Could be either. Depends on location, size and how deep they think it goes.

My wife had a golf ball one removed from her shoulder. Local anaesthetic only,. Was sore for a few days afterward, but now all good. Left a scar which she used Bio Oil on, which reduced the redness.
Good luck, hope all goes well.

Thank you! I think by the sounds of it, it'll probably be a local for me too.

I had one removed from my palm, had the arm knocked out with anastethic, I was in and out within about 4 hours. Arm numb for about 48 hours.

Had one about the size of a pack of butter removed from low back/top of bum. Twice 😔. They can grow back, so make sure you discuss this and ensure they take the time to get it all out and go deep enough. Both times local aesthetic and was ok. A bit of prodding and pulling feeling but not painful. 2nd time seems to have worked better as 4 years ago and no regrowth felt. Left a scar, and skin a bit saggy there, but healed very well both times. Was back at work after 3 days- mainly becuase scar was under pressure when I sat down- needed to stand or lie on my side for a few days. If they are offering do get it done as they just continue to grow if they are going to get big enough to operate, then it’ll be harder to get out.

I've definitely agreed to get it done so it's now just a matter or waiting for the referral to come through. When I 1st discovered it I didn't even know I had it. I asked my husband to scratch my back and he noticed it. But it its visible through tops so definitely bigger. I'm really not bothered about a scar as I won't see it plus I'd rather that than my 3rd boob as its known due to where it is!! It looks like one on my back!

Hi op, I have one in a similar place on my back about 12cm by 12cm, which has grown recently. Unfortunately I have been told it won’t be removed on the NHS. I really want it gone but don’t like the price private hospitals charge!

Seriously, get a second opinion on that. That's a big lump you're being expected to live with. Tell them it hurts.

I have one as well in the same area. It's 15x15 and causing pulling to one side, gp refused to refer for years as "lipomas don't cause pain", it's been 12 years of fighting to get it removed.

I finally got an appointment with a surgeon in February 2020 and booked to remove under local anaesthetic in mid March and well you know what happened so it's on the indefinite waiting list.

Physio over the years has given exactly the same exercises each time which I gave up on after 3 years and not wanting to cause myself more pain in a daily basis for no benefit. I'm given muscle relaxers and told it doesn't cause pain. Despite full dose of relaxers, its causing intense pain and spasm. 😔
