Any ideas what might be going on with DP's scabby mole? Picture

Photo attached. It doesn't seem to "fit" with any of the descriptions of the various scary moles we've found online but it's gone almost verruca-like in appearance with lots of tiny black dots.

Dermatologist appointment is booked but just looking for some reassurance of what this could be. I've gone round and round in circles Google searching and can't find anything similar...

It could be something called sebhorreic keratosis, quite common as you get older (you don’t mention his age). They are usually slightly raised, crusty and brownish in colour. They used to be called senile warts years ago. Quite benign, I have lots!
I’m sure the dermatologist will be able to put your minds at rest.

I agree with Nan I have some of these and was quite concerned but was told they were seborrheic keratosis. Not very pretty. Definitely worth getting them checked though. Hope it's nothing serious for you dp.

Thank you both. He did actually have this mole checked out a couple of years ago but it's recently taken on this scabby appearance and turned more red.

He's 37 so from reading up he's on the cusp of the age where SK can start to appear. Can't work out of moles turn into SK or whether it's a separate thing. Such a worry, fingers crossed we'll have some answers soon.

I don’t think moles turn in to SK, they just appear randomly, usually on the torso, underarms and shoulders, especially where clothes can rub. A bit unsightly, but quite harmless. GPs used to shave them off, but it’s now considered cosmetic, so they no longer do it.

My dermatologist says to keep an eye on changes to my existing moles, as well as new ones. It’s definitely worth getting checked out so well done for acting swiftly!

My dh has one almost identical on his back. He has seen specialist as all good.

Ive recently had one removed - used a private clinic as NHS wont do them now and mine was on my face. Dr used local anaesthetic and scraped it off, cauterising as he went which left a scab but this fell off about 2 weeks later just leaving a smooth slightly pink area which is already hard to see. Cost £350.

I think the same - I have lots too, but best to just check

Dermatologist had a look... a few mixed messages! She said she didn't think it was a mole... but if it was anything it would only be something minor... but she wants to get it off and they'll be doing an excision next Thursday. Hopefully not too long to wait for some answers.

I'll come back and update for anyone else who might have something similar in the future.

My partner has several of these sebhorreic keratosis moles on his back

He's recently developed dermatitis and following oral steroids and ABs a combination of dermol lotion and a steroid cream has been used on his back. The black/brown crusting on the moles has disappeared .Seems to have been a side effect of the treatment for the dermatitis .

Amazing .

Bob1231 · 04/12/2023 18:41

just looking for some advise, I have have this checked and I was informed by my GP it was a benign. I am currently pregnant so not sure if my hormones could cause the changes however my mole has become a little extra scabby. I am unable to get into the doctors for another week or so and Google isn’t helping the situation. Thank you
