Hiya... i just want to know if any of you moms had this happening to your child ...so i have a 2,5 year old daughter, most of the time fussy eater ... on Tuesday morning she vomited 3 times which i thought ok maybe she ate something and had a bad tummy as she didn't vomit after that it was one off ... but then she hardly ate for the rest of the day because she was vomiting in the morning... Wednesday she was again put off her foods but she had some cereal in the morning, few bites of banana and couple spoons of yogurt wasn't really interested.... then for dinner she had few spoons of rice curry and then we took her to the park and she looked absolutely fine she was happy running around ..... she didn't want to eat anything after that .....so had a bath and went to sleep ....shes not diabetic but on Thursday morning i had the most scariest day in my life ... she slept longer than usual she usually wakes up at 6.30am .. but that day she woke up at 8.30 which was unusual but I thought well maybe she needs it ... she woke up asking for drink .. took her out but she didn't want to walk where normally shes crazy and happy in the mornings..that morning she wasn't... i gave her a drink and she looked so tired and drained out her hands were slightly shaking so i put her on the sofa and she lay on there and after 30 mins she fell back to sleep .. I immediately thought..ok shes coming up with something but about 1h later she woke up and had a fit .. well thats what i think it was .. she was sleeping on her tummy and she woke up her bach was arching up wards and her head and arms and she was crying it was horrible to see i immediately hugged her and could feel her body stiff and after few seconds she relaxed at the same time I rang the ambulance and she told me it looks like it was a fit and then after few minutes ambulance came and done all checks everything was ok but her bloods were really low... the dropped to 2.9 where normal is between 4 and 8 .... so they were a bit concerned as it was low .. tool her to hospital she had blood tests and there she was so hungry she ate a toastie with some cookie .. she was drinking but still very weak .. her bloods came back all good they said her bloods went down properly because she didn't eat properly the last few days and they said she seem yo hav3 mild throat infection which probably made her not want to eat..and after few hours in hospital after she had a sugary drink and food her bloods went back to over 4 ... I know i already spoke to doctors but I wanted to see if there is any moms out here who had similar situation with their little one as i am so paranoid now .. it kind of scared me now and because shes a fussy eater i am literally worrying like mad every time she refuses to eat that it will happen again ... I am so worried that this will come back again if she skips her meal or has few days without eating like she should but its so hard to make her eat and I am so scared and worried constantly.. just wanted to see other people's opinions on this ...😥

And also she never had a fit so that was the most scariest part and they said it was because of her sugar was so low her body reacted that way but surely thats not normal .. it must of been bad for a body to have a fit ... but why it was that bad ? I mean she always been fussy eater but shes healthy her weight and high is perfect so why this happened now but not before when she had fussy days where she wouldn't eat for few days ? Im just so worried

My sons type 1 and we constantly watch his blood glucose levels with a monitor. When he has a vomiting bug we need to reduce his insulin for a good few days afterwards. His stomach won't digest the food properly so his insulin needs decrease. He will feel better but his stomach is still healing. I'm guessing your little one had similar and the food wasn't digesting, and the glucose stored in the liver had been exhausted.

Bad hypos (low blood sugars) can result in seizures as the body cannot function with no glucose.

We had a similar thing with my LO at about 18 months. She’d been sick and off her food but it hasn’t been anything too severe. On waking the next morning she was grizzly and floppy- called an ambulance and sugars were 2.something. It was terrifying and I felt exactly as you do now (although she hadn’t had a fit). We’re just always really mindful of getting her to eat and drink regularly and keep an extra eye on her when poorly. She hasn’t had a repeat episode since Smile I know you must be so scared but it’s all a learning curve and hopefully she won’t experience it again.

bruffin · 13/08/2021 22:47

Are you sure she didnt have a febrile convulsion?

Izabela54 · 14/08/2021 06:20

Thank you for your replies x ... yeah Doctor told me the fit was mostly hypo but it scared me as I thought ok to be that bad the must be a reason and she's diabetic but everything came back okay and from what I knew its mostly diabetic that have a risk of getting bad hypo but I must of been wrong but it was scary ... and thebearandthemare.. its a relief to hear that she never had it since and hopefully mine wont too because its terrifying! ... and the only thing like you said .. it must of been linked to the vomiting and just being a bit poorly because she also wasn't severely poorly only one off vomit and that was it and a mild throat infection...but shes been worse before like ear infection .. or had stomach bug for 3 days and never had this but im guessing it must of been one of them unlucky once. .so I will definitely keep and eye on her more from now on when she even has a mild cold

And bruffin.. I thought the same but apparently its when you have a fever and she didn't have one

Get her to drink rehydration sachets or flat coke if she's poorly. Rather than just water or sugar free squash.

Izabela54 · 14/08/2021 06:48

Yeah to be honest she usually drink fruit shoots or sugary squash the 50/50 one .. but I bought this other flavour and she didn't like it so she was drinking water for the past few days and maybe that was my mistake to give her water when she needed sugar but i had no idea ... but i always make sure I have a sugary drink incase shes not eating much or poorly

can u leave a message for your health visitor and get her weighed a few times over the next 3-6 months by them to check her growth is going OK? They should be able to help with seeking advice for a plan for you with her eating. It's probably the being sick that has sent her sugar level so low rather than the usual fussy eating.
If she's vomitting squash can sometimes be better than water, check in with your HV what they suggest. They can also probably help with the very restricted eating too, as you're aware she needs calories and nutrients to grow well and for her health not just now but for the future, it sounds like the situation is really tricky so they may refer you to a dietician who can prescribe nutritious milkshakes for her or help with advice around different foods to make sure she's getting what she needs. Most toddlers are pretty fussy, but from your description it sounds like this could be more than that so worth monitoring how well she is growing.
You sound like a really lovely caring mum and it's natural to worry, especially after she was so poorly. Sending hugs.

Untreated (or new) diabetes causes high sugar levels, not low. So while it is entirely possible for low sugars to cause a fit, this isn't diabetes

careerchangeperhaps · 14/08/2021 07:56

My friends little girl used to suffer from this (ketotic hypoglycaemia). Basically every time she had a stomach bug or didn't eat properly for whatever reason, her blood sugars dropped very low and she'd often had to be admitted to hospital for a drip. She grew out of it by the time she started school (it started at about 18 months).

Not quite, it's when the temperature shoots up rapidly.

PippaPots · 14/08/2021 09:18

Definitely not diabetes, low blood sugar is not a symptom of undiagnosed diabetes. Diabetes causes high blood sugar, the lows are from too much synthetic insulin. (When insulin is injected it drops the blood sugar until it’s used up. If you reach a good level any extra insulin onboard will keep dropping until it’s too low) ((how much insulin for each meal, snack, correction and basal dose is based on many factors - how much food you’re going to eat, the GI content of that food, how much insulin is still there from earlier meals, how low/high you’re starting at, if you’re dropping or rising, what exercise you’ve done, exercise you’re planning to do shortly, where you’re injecting (stomach works faster than leg. Unless you’re running where it’ll work much faster, weather - heat and cold means running lower, stress, illness and hormones))

Thank you much for all of your messages!!! I swear since Im reading them I am so much more calmer !!! Thank you .. shes back to eating pretty well now but whenever she gets a bug or poorly in general or whenever shes fussy ( as shes not a 24/7 fussy) .. she will have for example 2 weeks where she eats really well and then 2 weeks where everything is " ewwww I don't like it" so I really do hope like most of you say this was caused because of the vomiting and being put off food because of that reason x but its a relief to know that its something I can prevent from happening next time xx
