Dh has Gastric Flu. Anything he drinks is coming straight back out again. What can we do?

He hasnt been sick, its just all diorreah (sorry if TMI).

He has headache but thats probably because he hasnt eaten and barely drank.
He's also freezing cold but its red hot in the house.

All I've done to help is give him a smal glass of water with some ice in and literally a minute after he has a sip its coming back out again and he's getting stomach cramps.

Is there anything you can do or is it just a case of waiting till it passes?

Also I'm not sure whether to pack the kids off to a relatives because I'm now 1 day overdue and the last thing I need is for them to get it and for someone to have to look after them with gastric flu whilst I'm giving birth!

Help me!

I think ice can be worse (not for everyone though - think the cold water can hurt your tummy when it's that bad!).

have you any Rehydrate? (I've forgotten the UK name - is it Dioralyte?) or failing that, flat lemonade or coke.

Lots of little sips.

MrsBadger · 29/11/2007 18:43

how do you know it's 'gastric flu'? just sounds like a tummy bug to me. has he seen a doc?

paracetamol for the fever, boiled sweets for sugar, dioralyte or Lucozade Sport for hydration.

foxinsocks · 29/11/2007 18:43

oh poor you - what a dreadful time for it to happen. One of these bugs is doing the rounds at the moment I think.

I hope you don't get it!

paulaplumpbottom · 29/11/2007 18:44

Give him flat coke, he'll need the sugar

Ginger ale is also good due to its ginger content

LadyOfTheFlowers · 29/11/2007 18:46

He needs to swallow some paracetamol tabs, dry if he can, then not eat or drink for a minimum of 4 hours, then try tiny sips of water.
Paracetamol will not irritate his belly and help with the horrendous cramping.
This is what i was advised 6 months ago when I had it. I called NHS direct crying and thought I was going to die! It was awful.
A local Doc called me and this is what he told me. It worked.
Hope heis feeling better soon.

Nbg · 29/11/2007 18:47

He's had gastric flu before which was diagnosed by a gp and he's exactly the same to how he was then.

I have coke which I can pour into a glass and let it go flat.

Boiled sweets is a good idea. Will have a rummage for them.

aha, gotcha

LadyOfTheFlowers · 29/11/2007 18:48

Anything he swallows that is wet will make him cramp.

Nbg · 29/11/2007 18:51

I'll go give him the paracetamol, then let him have some fluids later then.

God I feel so sorry for myself its untrue.

DD has cme out in mystery spots on her face and looks like a hormonal teenager and ds has vomited in the night the last 2 nights and wont eat.

Never rains it bloody pours!

any improvement on the poor guy nbg?
I really feel for him.

Forgot to say, after it has gone, he may get the odd cramp for up to about 2 weeks afterwards, but he probably knows that if he has had it before?

cremolafoam · 30/11/2007 11:50

dioralite- another recommendation.also make ice cubes from ribena and suck them.try alka seltzer instead of paracetemol.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 30/11/2007 11:51

Ice pops. Coke flavour could be best..

LadyOfTheFlowers · 30/11/2007 11:53

He will deffo barf if he has alka seltzer.

I suggested to Doc alka seltzer as that was all we had in when I had it and he almost shouted NO at me! LOL

cremolafoam · 30/11/2007 11:56

eek sorry. i just thought they might help settle tummy

Nbg · 30/11/2007 12:55

Awww thanks for asking

He's better today.
The paracetamol dry and then fluids later thing worked.
He took the paracetamol not long after you posted then I poured a glass of coke to go flat and let him have it at 10pm.
He kept that down and didnt go all night!

This morning he's even managed a small bacon sarnie and a cup of tea but he said he's got headache and still aches with a bit of stomach cramp but nothing compared to yesterday.

LOL at "small bacon sarnie"! Blokes don't really "do" the bland food thing do they.. As soon as they feel recovery on the horizon is "Raaaaaa.... gimme a STEAK!"

DH came home from hospital after day surgery with general anaesthetic and had a vindaloo!!!

Nbg · 30/11/2007 13:04

pmsl thats exactly what I said lol.

Nothing like starting small is there!

Good on your dh though with the vindaloo

My dp had this 2 weeks ago. As soon as it started, he ate the biggest meal he could to "give him the strength to fight it off" He spent the entire night doubled up in agony.

Nbg · 30/11/2007 14:03

lol

OMG, thats funny but not for your dh.

I'm counting myself lucky that I have dodged it both times he's had it.
