SOrry, I'm a bit slow in noticing this thread. I get migraines. Mine last for about 3 days. And I worship the tritans. If yours a relatively mild (not that any migrain is realy a "mild" experience, but relative to what some people suffer mine are mild), than I would recommend almotriptian. The side effects are fewer than sumatriptan (Imigran in the UK and Imitrex in the US). Both of these are made by Galxo Smith Klein. I tried one other triptan once. I forgot what it was called, but the side effects were a lot stronger -- didn't like it at all.

I find all over the counter remedies / pain killers to be virtually useless. But the triptans are fantastic. (No I'm not a paid spokeperson) Only caatch is that you have to avaoid these when you are pregnant.

Sorry, triptans, not tritans

I swear by Syndol too. It's a painkiller and a muscle relaxant, and you can get them over the counter. You can feel them working after about 20 minutes and they take away that thump thump feeling in your head. Start with one though, not two, to see how you go. Hope you are feeling better.

I have been having migraines for the last 20 years - four days a month, cannot even clean my teeth without being sick. Tried everything, and then dr prescribed on the triptans (Naratriptan in my case). It is FANTASTIC for me - no side effects and no headaches, sounds a bit melodramatic but my life has totally changed.

I used to use a hot compress, rather than a cold one, helps to send you off to sleep too.

Zephyrcat, I've only scanned this thread so apologies if this has already been mentioned. I would suggest you contact an osteopath (one who is skilled in cranial osteopathy) and just ask them if they might be able to help. I was suffering from daily headaches (not migraines but quite severe) earlier in my pregnancy and after a couple of sessions of cranial treatment they disappeared and haven't returned since (this is over a month ago). Apparently cranial treatment realigns your whole body, thus correcting any problems and can be used to treat a wide range of conditions. Of course, migraine may not be something that can be helped but you've got nothing to lose by enquiriing.

zephyrcat, don't have time to read all the posts but have you tried cool strips that you put on your forehead? I swear by them, especially now that I am pregnant and can't take painkillers.

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 15:13

thanks to you all so much for all of your advice - I'm going to try my best to try all of your suggestions and hopefully can find something to ease them - although I've had them since i was about 12 so over the years I have learnt to deal with them if I dont have any tablets to hand. I never realised there were so many different options!! Thank you all again

Thanks for all the info regarding what pills work from the docs, I am going to get some feverfew and have another trip to the docs to get in some medication in case the feverfew doesnt help.
Thanks again every one

just wanted to add, I have always had migraines with the pins-and-needles, visual distortion, and inability to speak or find words, and I read recently that if you are most susceptible at period time then it may be a sign of magnesium deficiency. So I'm now trying a big daily magnesium supplement to see how it goes.

Just wanted to add my bit as I suffer debilitating migraines every month, syndol helps me, oestopathy took them away for over a year, but now they back, the doctor has just prescribed me Zolmitriptan 2 months ago, you take them as you feel it starting and it stopped mine completely. Normally I can be bed ridden for up to 48 hours and instead within an hour it had gone. I am feeling extrmely grateful for them and quite evangelical as a result! Hope you can find something to suit you.
