Odd pain in calf?

Hello all, has anyone experienced odd pain in their calf? Trying to work out what it could be. Only in one leg, and comes on when I lie down. So v painful in morning and eases off during the day while on my feet. Had it for a week now.

Can you remember spraining it?

joobleydoo · 11/08/2021 12:33

Nope, no recollection of hurting it. Does a sprain only hurt when you're lying down?

There’s a couple of things that spring to mind. Firstly, foot drop. This can be worsened by heavy covers that weigh down the top of your foot, kind of putting the foot into a pointed toes position. This shortens and tightens the calf. Some stretches like standing with your toes on a step and stretching your weight into your heels will help if it’s this.
Otherwise, depending on your age and other health factors, it could be an early sign of vascular insuffiency in that leg. The blood can get down to supply your leg adequately when standing etc with the help of gravity but struggles when you’re supine. This would need to be ruled out with a doppler assessment at your GP.

Thanks @SingingWaffleDoggy this is really interesting. I had bad varicose veins in that leg when pregnant and recently my blood pressure has been high, not sure if that's connected to blood flow to the leg, is there anything I can do to relieve it other than see the gp? Thanks v much

Seeing your latest update op I’d strongly recommend you see your GP, this is not to alarm you at all but any calf pain with a history of varicose veins needs looking at quickly to rule out DVT.

Michaelknightsleatherjacket · 11/08/2021 18:38

See your gp,(could be dvt) and tbh, I’d go to a walk-in ASAP if there’s one available rather than wait for a routine appointment.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 11/08/2021 21:57

Definitely get checked out by the GP for DVT. They will probably do a blood test to exclude it. If it’s not that it would be worth getting a doppler done. Varicose veins are caused by difficulty getting blood back up from the legs due to valve problems and it pooling. However, this would not tie in with your symptoms of leg pain on elevation as the gravity would assist in the blood return. Most women should be wearing light compression stockings to prevent venous problems but you’d need to rule out arterial problems with your symptoms otherwise the pressure could prevent adequate blood supply to your feet

Thanks all, I appreciate the advice. Will go to gp.

Another vote for potential dvt- straight to doctors tomorrow

joobleydoo · 11/08/2021 22:53

Really? Definitely no swelling or redness.
I'm a bit freaked out.

Don’t panic. It’s easily remedied if that’s what it is Flowers and if it’s not that you will get some help figuring out what it is

joobleydoo · 12/08/2021 16:44

Just been in A&E for past 6 hours after GP sent me here. Doctor here wasn't concerned at first and thought it was likely plantar fasciitis but did a blood test to be sure - blood test came back high in some kind of marker so they've given me blood thinners for next 2 days snd then back in for a scan.

OP posts:
Gladioli23 · 12/08/2021 16:57

Hope you're doing okay OP, it likely means you had night results in a d-dimer test, so they've given you blood thinners as a precautionary measure until they can scan you to get it checked out.

Gladioli23 · 12/08/2021 16:57

Night = High*

SingingWaffleDoggy · 12/08/2021 22:12

Glad you’re getting some treatment. If it turns out you do have a DVT ask about ongoing preventative measures. Take care OP

joobleydoo · 12/08/2021 23:50

Thank you both!

@Gladioli23 Thanks for reminding me what the test was, they did say d-dimer, and that it can be high for lots of reasons - but I've just Googled and it says other causes of a high test are cancer or sepsis Confused I'm not sure I want either of those rather than a DVT! Can you have a high test but without any underlying illness?

Both my children have autism and need me a lot, I can't countenance the idea of anything being wrong with me and not being able to look after them.

OP posts:
Michaelknightsleatherjacket · 13/08/2021 07:25

It may just be superficial thrombophlebitis.
So not a dvt but you’ll still have raised d-dimers, iirc.
Anyway medical googling is no good , try not to worry. You’re in the right place to get the treatment you need.

Gladioli23 · 13/08/2021 08:56

I think with a d-dimer (but not a medic so not certain) that it's very sensitive but also non-specific. So it could be high for a number of reasons, including fighting off an infection, but it gives a good reason to continue and do a scan to check if other symptoms are present.

joobleydoo · 13/08/2021 18:01

Thanks both Smile

Could I check what the issue was here eventually OP? Having the same symptoms myself for three days
