Did you know that if you’ve had IVF you are more likely to go through an early menopause?

This is complete news to me. I’ve just watched a video from Trinny where she discusses this as part of a Menopause conversation.

she's talking BS

It was in the paperwork I got when I first started IVF.
It didn’t enter my head to be concerned about it and wouldn’t have stopped me having the 5 attempts anyway.

PeachesPumpkin · 11/08/2021 11:28

I haven’t heard this and having had ICSI myself i am 50 with no menopausal symptoms yet (following my
mother who had a later menopause).
It wouldn’t have made any difference to me though - I would still have gone for ICSI, without hesitation.

RedToothBrush · 11/08/2021 11:32

You watched a video on social media from a celebrity with no expertise and are taking it as correct without fact checking elsewhere?

Hmm.

ExpressDelivery · 11/08/2021 11:36

I haven't seen it and it doesn't sound particularly credible, but my first thought was that if you're having fertility problems, there's something "non standard" about your reproductive system already.

cathyandclare · 11/08/2021 11:42

I think low egg retrieval at first IVF was linked with early menopause, but as Express said that's likely to reflect an issue with mother rather than being a result of the treatment.

I had no fertility problems, if was MF but I still had to do the IVF bit to stimulate follicles and have eggs harvested ready for ICSI.

OP I was still having periods when I went through surgical menopause at 46, however I was definitely peri menopausal from 40 ish.

GoAwayCat · 11/08/2021 11:47

I've no idea if this was in the paperwork or not, can't remember at all, but it would not have affected my decision-making around the treatment. By that stage nothing would have.

FreeBritnee · 11/08/2021 14:00

I'll have to rewatch the video to know what professional told Trinny this, but she said it was due to the egg retrieval process, hence why she went into the menopause early as opposed to when her mum started the menopause.

Makes sense if follicle stimulation is involved. A woman is born with a finite number of eggs, once the eggs are all gone menopause ensues.

gogohm · 11/08/2021 14:21

Causation or correlation!!

Those undergoing ivf are more likely to have lower egg counts, that's why they needed ivf (obviously not those where it's male fertility issues!)

52andblue · 11/08/2021 14:28

Anecdata but I had 3 x ICSI for MF infertility.
(I responded well, had lots of eggs and 2 x pregnancies)
I am still menstruating (possibily not ovulating though?) at 53.

Deux · 11/08/2021 19:36

I was told this was nonsense. I can see why it might seem that if 24 follicles are aspirated then is that 2 years of periods disappeared.

I was told that during normal unassisted ovulation, our bodies recruit many follicles and send hormones to all of them but only one becomes the dominant one that’s ovulated. The other follicles that were involved just die.

I was told that the ivf drugs stimulate the follicles that would have died anyway hence why no effect on menopause age.

I’m 55, had IVF/ICSI for MF and my last period was 10 months ago.

LividLaVidaLoca · 11/08/2021 19:41

Both the posters who’ve just rebutted this had IVF for MF.

Suggests correlation with those who have IVF for eg low ovarian reserve? I’m fucked then. 41 and had several rounds with shite response on max stims...

mytrueaccount · 11/08/2021 19:46

I had 4 rounds of ivf and am not menopausal at 56. Would love to be, darn it 🤣

Dragon50 · 11/08/2021 19:55

How early is early?

Ive had shit tons of IVF, based on my egg production I guess I can unscientifically argue that if each egg represents a monthly cycle I’ve bought my menopause forward by… circa 40 months (I tended to over respond).

Well which comes first egg (pun not intended) or chicken. The reason you (and I) had IVF was for low ovarian reserve - and that also means the change is if not around the corner, then looming in the near distance.
