Please help......dd has a 'bottom' problem

Sorry this is disgusting and I didn't want to put worms in the title but that's what the problem is and just as the name says, I am totally freaking out. dd told me she was itchy in her 2 bottoms so I looked and she has little tiny worms. I've rang the doctor on call but she says there's nothing I can do until I get some stuff from the chemist tomorrow.

Poor dd is crying with pain and itch and I'm about to tear all my skin off. Please can anybody tell me of home solutions to help get us through the night. I've already given her a bath and covered her bottom in a tub of vasoline as suggested by the doctor.

Poor little thing!

Sorry no experience but maybe medised to help her sleep through?

SpawnChorus · 28/11/2007 23:06

Poor you and DD. Try to chill out though - it's really not that bad, and you don;t want to worry your DD

I'm sure someone will be along with tips.

slim22 · 28/11/2007 23:06

the only thing I understand is that you have to treat the whole family.

SpawnChorus · 28/11/2007 23:07

By 'not that bad' I meant it's quite common, and basically harmless. Disn;t mean to sound dismissive

SpawnChorus · 28/11/2007 23:08

Medised good idea btw

TotallyFreaking · 28/11/2007 23:12

hi, thank you both. I've given her calpol and I'm trying to be calm but I really shouldn't have googled it. I'd normally take headlice and the like in my stride but having read the info on there, I'm only just holding it together. You're right, we all have to be treated and I may have to inform the school. So

I'll not sleep. I havn't told dd because it would freak her too.

medised is good. and just tell dd not to worry and you will get medicine for it in the morning. seems to be v v v comman atm, we just had a bout last week, and had to treat everyone.

then tomorrow, wash all bedding, cut all nails short, and change pj's everynight.

SoupDragon · 28/11/2007 23:16

You'll need Pripsen, not Ovex, for any under twos BTW. IIRC it has to be on prescription for them too. Ovex over the counter though.

Misdee · 28/11/2007 23:17

yes thats right soupy.

we had to have the ovex liquid family sized bottle. yuk!

DettaJnr · 28/11/2007 23:19

When my DD1 had this (and myself also) I used to wash with diluted tea tree oil. You do need to get some stuff from chemist.

You need to strip ALL bedding from ALL beds and wash at 60 degrees. When stripping beds make sure you are wearing a mask of some kind. The eggs, apparently, can be airborne. Vacuum bedrooms and clean everywhere. Treat whole family with medication and inform school.

My three children and myself (curiously not DH) have had worms twice in the last two years. Since the last outbreak I follow a routine of washing bottoms morning and evening with a little cotton wool to be on the safe side. So far we haven't had it for a year.

This sounds dramatic but it's not hard to follow. Around 4 in 10 children have it.

TotallyFreaking · 28/11/2007 23:22

Thank you

It's not great that it's common but that really does make me feel better. It's so embarrassing when you think what people might think but I suppose lots of families know it can happen.

Misdee, do you think I'll have to tell the school and the afterschool staff?

OP posts:
Misdee · 28/11/2007 23:23

yes you do. i couldnt catch dd2 teacher at the start of the day as too many parents around, so told her at the end of the day.

moondog · 28/11/2007 23:23

Good God,that mask advice is totally over the top!!

Misdee · 28/11/2007 23:24

i didnt wear a mask.

Misdee · 28/11/2007 23:25

this sort of mask?

moondog · 28/11/2007 23:27

Ooh, I've got one like that. Very nice it is too.
Shall wear next time house needs fumigating on account of miniscule parasites that hurt nobody.

DettaJnr · 28/11/2007 23:30

Moondog, when I posted on here asking about advice when we had worms and I was breastfeeding the advice I was given was to wear a mask. Just passing it on. Don't take the piss.

moondog · 28/11/2007 23:31

I can't help it sorry.
It's preposterous!
(I tihnk someone was having you on meself..)

Airborne?

Ok then, I'll go to doctor first thing then clean the entire house and disinfect everything. dd is seven so I guess Ovex for all of us. I'm not looking forward to telling the school but I suppose if I don't she'll get them again in a few weeks.

Thanks all for your posts. dd has since fallen asleep so hopefully she'll rest until the morning.

I know they're not all over me but I feel like my skin is crawling - I've just prescribed myself a bottle of red!!

Oh good, good. Glad to read the last few posts but I know you were helping Detta so thank you very much. Any and all advice is appreciated and you have all calmed down (along with the vino )

Mum has just arrived (prompted by my earlier high-pitched screaming down the phone)so I'll leave off here.

Thanks ladies

Your daughter will feel much better within 24 hours the meds. When we got them at first I had just had a baby and couldn't take the medication. Then we all got them again when school started in Sept the following year. Hope your DD feels better soon.
