PCOS & Mirena

My DS is now 9 weeks old and I had the Mirena fitted last week after hearing that it can really help with heavy periods, I have PCOS, struggle with lack of periods and weight gain (previously on Metformin for 4 years) and extremely heavy and painful periods for which I take Feminax + Mefenamic Acid. After the fitting my first period since the birth kicked in and on top of it being just as heavy and painful as I remember it, it has lasted much, much longer than before and is still now over!! I am really worried as I have now read that Mirena can cause ovarian cysts, weight gain and heavy periods and am wondering if I have made a SERIOUS mistake???? i'm now thinking that I would much rather have monthly periods and the pain
than not have one and be wondering if my PCOS has returned? I am not yet sure if I want to have more children but would love to keep my options open!! anyone out there have any experince with PCOS and Mirena?

Hi Tovik - PCOS is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Who fitted the Mirena, was it your GP?. Many such people are not all that good when it comes to dealing with gynae problems such as yours. I'd thus ask for a referral to a gynae for further evaluation. Its been fitted I think without establishing the actual cause/s of the pain and heaviness so won't actually do anything to help with these problems.

Has anyone actually tried to investigate the underlying cause/s behind the heavy and painful periods as PCOS does not normally cause these symptoms (this causes the irregularity of periods).

I am wondering if you've ever been checked out medically to see if you have either fibroids and or endometriosis. Both of these can cause heavy bleeding and in the case of endo, very painful periods. Also mefanemic acid is often given to women when endometriosis could be an issue.
