Can you buy inhalers over the counter in Boots in UK?

I am visiting my parents tomorrow and my asthma has been really bad lately - my inhaler is pretty low and I don't have time to order a new one here. I heard that some inhalers eg Ventolin, are available over the counter. Is this true?

Oh this happened to me when I was visiting my parents and didn't have one and had a really bad attack. I went to the chemist and they prescribed me an emergency one and just faxed my Doctors for the prescription.

If you have proof it is prescribed then you can get an emergency prescription from a pharmacy. Most supermarket ones are open at weekends.
A repeat slip, pharmacy label on box or sometimes just the inhaler, worth a try.

Asda sell the blue ones for £7 in their pharmacies

LockingJay · 27/08/2016 17:45

I had the same experience as Mrs recycle. Went in to chemist explained and they gave an inhaler after contacting doctors surgery.

PitchFork · 27/08/2016 17:46

no, salbutamol is prescription only.
I have heard that chemists might be able to give one inhaler as a stop gap. but not sure how that would work if away from home, i.e. not your usual chemist.

DottyGiraffe · 27/08/2016 20:37

Yes, ASDA do and Superdrug do if you've got a copy of your prescription.

ASDA I didn't need a script but had a consultation with the pharmacist.

This was pre- electronic prescriptions though so maybe they can access those now, I don't know.

FruitCider · 27/08/2016 20:42

Yes Asda dispense salbutamol without a prescription as a patient group direction.

Do you know if they still sell them, it'll be cheaper than paying for the prescription

whifflesqueak · 12/04/2017 11:33

organised I bought one for a fiver I think a couple of weeks ago.

was about 100 miles from home and my blue ran out. pharmacist was extremely helpful but I don't know if they'd allow it as a regular thing.

MozzchopsThirty · 12/04/2017 11:34

Yes you can

You can buy over the counter on the Internet. There are online pharmacies that sell generic medicines. I ordered several times (site -
www.meds-store24.com/medicine-products-asthma-en.html), the only problem is that you need to wait for the delivery time.

maggiso · 15/06/2017 23:45

i've bought ventolin under the emergency supply system - the pharmacist had to fax my go I think. I was very wheezy at the time. I don't know how that would work at a weekend perhaps sort out a new one tomorrow

I bought my daughter one from an online pharmacy called Pharmica (www.pharmica.co.uk/asthma/ventolin) about 2 months ago. It was done as a private prescription, I believe, and cost about £14.

totaltime123 · 02/03/2020 23:34
