What are the signs? ds has a rash on his cheeks and round his mouth, diarrhea and vomiting. Does this sound normal??

Not really. I think they can have a rash like that with a reaction.
Can you phone NHS direct or take ds to out of hours dr?

rosybud · 28/11/2007 20:24

My dd is allergic to amoxycillin. She gets a full body rash (not itchy just red and bumpy) and explosive diarrohea (sorry!). It comes up straight after one dose, doc has trouble believing that it is an allergy!! Sounds as though your ds might be allergic, what is he on the amoxydoodah for?

MerlinsBeard · 28/11/2007 20:25

bumping this up for you, have noidea but in my unprofessional and unexperienced opinion it does sound like an allergy or intolerance. In which case, it could mean that you need to avpid ALL penicillin based meds

theUrbanDryad · 28/11/2007 20:26

suspected chest infection. i'm gonna phone nhs direct now...

Doc was reluctant to say she is allergic as apparently it takes out loads of drugs from the system that can be prescribed for her. But they did as it was definitely an allergy.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 28/11/2007 20:27

Amoxy is penicillin and allergy to it is quite common. I'm allergic and react like rosybud's dd - the rash I get is horrendous. I'd see if you can change it for something else UD.

EmsMum · 28/11/2007 20:30

Yes you need to avoid all penicillin type ABs.
My mum has been allergic to penicillin almost since the stuff was invented, and they still occasionally mess up and prescribe her the wrong stuff. Which at over 80 shortly after heart surgery was pretty negligent. Always double check prescriptions.

theUrbanDryad · 28/11/2007 20:33

NHS direct only taking "urgent" calls. website useless. have phoned out of hours doctor who's going to call me back...

My youngest is allergic to Penicillin , flagged up with he was about 1 yr old and had a rash after Amoxycillin.

Its on his medical notes at Gp and recently when he went into hospital for a minor OP he had a big wristband stating NO PENICILLN.

Its never been a major issue as regarding anti biotic prescriptions .

theUrbanDryad · 28/11/2007 20:36

what sort of symptoms does he get CaptainU? is it something they grow out of? there's no history of allergy to penicillin in the family....

OP posts:
CaptainUnderpants · 28/11/2007 20:38

He had a rash, he has not been given it again. I have heard , dont know if this is correct as not a medical person , that if given again the symtoms could be worse .

MerlinsBeard · 28/11/2007 20:38

my sister is allergic to penicillin, has been all her life. She has to wear a medicalert necklace so that people know not to gove her anything. her reaction is near fatal though!

no family history of it here either

CaptainUnderpants · 28/11/2007 20:41

No family history here either . This might be useful here

theUrbanDryad · 28/11/2007 20:57

right, the out of hour's dr just phoned back (he was lovely, very sexy NZ accent! ) and said it doesn't sound like an allergy, but to stop giving him the anti-b's as it sounds like a viral thing. he said to take ds back to the dr's tomorrow if i'm still worried.

thanks for your help everyone

My dd was diagnosed as having an allergy to penicillin after coming out in a full body rash while I was on amoxycillin and breastfeeding her
Has never been a problem for us, is in her notes thats she is allergic to penicllin and doest seem to have been a problem when she needs antib's she's just given alternatives.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/11/2007 21:02

Ooh sorry I just found this because that is just like my DD when I took amoxycillan. I think she got it through my breastmilk, her eyes got all puffy and hard to open too. I was really worried - this was after two doses, so I stopped taking it and within twelve hours she was fine and dandy.

BTW I've spoken to that doctor I'm sure, you always sort of wish it was you he was treating

moodlesoup · 29/11/2007 10:47

i'm allergic to amoxycillin. just means you can't have any penicillin based medicines which means you get things like ethrymicin instead... my reactions are bulging eyes, and a skin rash.

Tenalady · 29/11/2007 10:51

yes DS has allergy it caused projectile vomiting, diarrohea, high temperature and general listlessness.
I was told it is the cheapest penicillin and the moment it was changed to a more upmarket brand all became fine.
