hello,

ds has a cold, its a common problem i know, so what do you do for your lo's to help releive them?

he's at the steaming nose (clear not green) stage, no temperature, but really coughing (made worse by his streaming nose) he's trying to nap and is really miserable as cough/nose keeping him awake, he's had a small dose of medised, which he hates.

anyone got any wonder cures they swear by?

btw i tried vicks on the soles of his feet, but it hasnt worked - why am i not surprised

baby vics on the chest helps to breathe at night, thing is the snot needs to be coming out not staying in you want to encourage it. I'd reduce mucus forming foods while it's particularly bad, cut out sugar and switch to an alternative milk like goats milk.

hmmm... he has been drinking a lot of milk, i guess thats not helping him any.... will try that, thanks

Karvol capsules are really good - you break them onto a tissue and keep nearby when sleeping.

Love2dance · 28/11/2007 16:17

Karvol or Olbas oil plug ins are both really good for night times. They emit menthol etc. vapours and are suitable for 3m plus.

Excuse my ignorance (I don't live in UK), but I am puzzled by messages such as this. Vicks is well and good, but isn't it possible to go to your paed and ask for a prescription?

There are very good nasal sprays for kids, which dry up the nose with long term effects that last through the night. Your kid's paediatrician would be able to prescribe one for you.

Vaporiser - Sudafed and Karvol do plug in's, Medised, Otrivine drops. Put his mattress on a slope

LIZS · 28/11/2007 17:58

CoteDAzur - you don't generally have a paed in UK , it is gp and usually a simple cold is treated symptomatically so you would n't book an appointment unless it was prolonged or had other symptoms. Could ask pharmacist for advice though.

andaPartridgeinClareV · 28/11/2007 18:19

as lizs says really cotedazure, its a cold and unless it goes on for more than a week the doctors aren't generally interested.
thanks all for replies. will try a vapouriser. he's already had medised and i wont give him any more milk today.

what are otrivine drops lizs?

Otrivine are nasal drops , they help relieve the stuffiness and dry up the mucous. The ones for children are from 2 but I think there are also infant ones, which we had for dd. If not try saline drops.
