Inspired by Paula Radcliffe's victory at the new york marathon (but HORRIBLY unfit), I wondered if anyone would like to start running, or keep running, or get even better at running, and support each other here by telling each other how we're getting on, or swap tips, ideas etc?

I did quite a bit of running earlier this year, a few 10k races (and loved it, felt so much better, really proud, with more energy etc) but have let it all go to pot and now have jelly belly & bum, and a running bra that's probably covered with cobwebs somewhere...

Am totally un-athletic, was smoking heavily until 2 weeks ago, and just wanna make a positive change, avoid a winter of blobbiness, and feel really good & fit come spring.

so anyone like to join me....?

Morning all, I'm still plodding on. Went out yesterday afternoon - it was beautiful - sunny and not too cold, lovely running weather. Did 5.5 km and then last night power walked the same route with another friend.

Twink - sorry about the London. Can you get in through a charity with guaranteed places - or do you not want to do the fundraising side? (I know it can get a bit much )

Embee · 30/11/2004 11:48

Great excuse ha. Will defo want to get back into shape after number so hope you are all still running in a years time!

luckymum · 30/11/2004 13:46

Hannahsaunt- ouch! What happened?

Embee - congratulations!! I'll still be here, I've been running for over 5 years now and couldn't give up even if I wanted too!

Thanks guys, I was really upset about it at the weekend but now I'm looking on the positive side & thinking I can do my winter training aiming for a spring half marathon & use the long summer evenings getting ready for an autumn marathon.

On the other hand...

Luckymum, I think I could get enough sponsorship for a charity place (I currently do 2 races a year when I bug friends & family for money) but I'd have to do it for a charity that I already support & feel strongly about so I'll perhaps see if they would be interested in me.

Hannah's aunt, what on earth have you done ??

Emmbee congrats !! Couldn't resist this though !

Beety maybe your circulation is on a roll, turn off the central heating & spend the money saved on those red Nike shoes - unless of course the warm feelings come in phases (my mum is suffering at the moment...)

I've run twice this week since being inspired by this thread - only 20 mins each time (and some of that was walking), but boy do I feel better for it. I have made a plan and set a goal (I NEVER normally plan anything unless absolutely forced so that was quite hard, but I realised it was important if I am to have a chance of sticking with this as opposed to it being a two week wonder).

A bit confused about what and when to eat - but am checking out some of the other websites recommended on this thread.

I'm running alone and at night and safety crosses my mind, but am trying to avoid areas that are too quiet (I'm in London so it's not that hard). I'd read advice about taking a mobile but it made me feel more vulnerable, not less - after all surely I'm more likely to be mugged for a mobile than anything else - and how will I get the chance to use it if I'm in danger? Or have I missed something obvious?

hey it all went quiet there for a while...
I didn't get out at the weekend as was doing 3hrs of ironing on Sat after a friend dropped in unexpectedly and I felt I had to apologise for the mnster ironing pile.
Sunday I went for a swim; Monday I ran home from work! well, sort of, ran for 18mins, walked briskly for a bit more then got the bus the rest of the way!
Heck, I could do that again tonight except I've not thought of it so no running shoes here.
Well, will go out again later. BTW, after about 5 mins on Monday had incredibly tightcalves, why was this? Running earlier than usual? (3pm); because of swim the night before?? I don't normally get that.

Dingle · 01/12/2004 10:31

Shame on me I haven't run for a week now. Several reasons, all my spare time has been spent either reading up on dd's speech & language info, making xmas cards!(have a bit of a backlog and a few orders coming in now!panic) Mainly though I 've been having back pain again, really playing up, I think I may have to go to doctor about it-I can't continue to ignore it for much longer. Oesteopath recommended swimming or yoga- don't have time & hate swimming, but I do try to fit in a few yoga stretches throughout the day! Don't really know whether the running is good or bad now!
Well done everyone, it did go rather quiet- you are all putting me to shame.

luckymum · 01/12/2004 10:35

Dingle - My running mate used to suffer dreadfully with her back but found that running improved it. It strengthens your core muscles. BUT definitely invest in good running shoes.

merrygoround · 03/12/2004 21:04

Went for a very untaxing run tonight (3rd this week, 4th in over 25 years!). I've had a long drawn out cough/cold and my period started yesterday - my head feels like it's in a goldfish bowl IYKWIM - so I wasn't sure whether or not I should run. Hence the compromise of taking it easy.

What do others do? Now that I have got started I'd be a bit scared to miss a session in case I lose the momentum.

Santasluckylittlehelper · 03/12/2004 21:11

merrygoround - I usually do as you have - go out but take it easy.

You shouldn't run if you have symptoms 'below the neck' - a cold is OK but not a chest infection. A very experienced running friend ended up with pericarditis (inflammation aroung the heart) because she pushed herself too soon after a bout of flu. Take care.

just checking in to say ran good 20-min run on Wednesday but for various reasons (going out, dh going out, working) have not been out since. Pilates tomorrow I hope then run Tuesday.
keep it up all of you, let's have some positive stories to inspire me!

santaclary · 07/12/2004 09:52

where is everyone?? "ran" home last night, its 5k but I walked a lot of it as had realy tight calves after about 10 mins (sigh).
But I went to Pilates as well so feeling quite good this am.

fionagib · 07/12/2004 10:22

To my shame I haven't been out for a couple of weeks due to sore foot which IS better now - now madly busy with work, out tonight & tomorrow, but WILL get back into this fri or the weekend at the latest, cos it does make me feel SO much better if only I can get off my lazy rump and make the time!! Isn't it easy to lose the momentum esp in winter...
Rather ashamed.... Blush Will come back on here & report better efforts!!

santaclary · 16/12/2004 07:55

ok ladies has this thread died? I have been out a bit over the last week, but best effort is 15-17 mins. Feeling it in my calves just now.
Need some encouragement to keep going when there is soooo much else to do.....

Santasluckylittlehelper · 16/12/2004 08:52

I don't think the thread's died - just my motivation. Struggling with dark mornings, wet evenings and Christmas shopping at the mo. Good on you for getting out though - you're certainly doing better than me. I'm looking to the New Year for renewed incentive now

Twink · 16/12/2004 22:28

Not dead, but I keep getting diverted with all the new site search bits !

I'm struggling with motivation a bit, I'm full of sore throat/bad chest but no cold and this week recieved a second letter from FLM to say I was a reject - one application & 2 rejections - huh !

Had our group mince pie run on Sunday, 10 miles in Christmas spirit (stitched tinsel down my legging seams..) followed by hot choc/mulled wine/mince pies - bliss, after running that far you just know that even 3 mince pies aren't going to attatch to your hips.

Have kept trying to run off this lurgy but I've finally been persuaded that rest might help :-(

Santasluckylittlehelper · 30/12/2004 18:33

What's going on here then? Has everyone given up or are you just resting over Christmas like me?

I went out on Christmas Eve and will be going again in the morning - a couple of days of snow put paid to my plans for earlier in the week.

What about you lot................?

mckenzie · 30/12/2004 18:57

I had a great run day before yesterday. At 31 weeks pregnant it was never going to be fast and a PB but I attacked a particular hill with more gusto that I think I've done in a long time and I felt great. It helped that the park was full of families out for post-christmas walks so the possible thought of doing run/walk/run etc was pushed to the back of my mind (my pride wouldn't let me). Babysitter for DS willing I shall be out again tomorrow (probably have a crap run though, that's the way it goes at the moment!)

sophabaubles · 30/12/2004 18:58

i ran on xmas day. and today (nothing in between!).

am running 20 minutes now. it nearly kills me. i think that because i'm not disciplined enough to do every other day, altho i'm getting fitter, it's going slower than it would if i ran more often, i can feel a new year's resolution coming on.

Potty1 · 30/12/2004 19:00

Sophabaubles - Christmas Day?!!?

Mckenzie - 31 weeks?!!

You both deserve a medal!
