My 4 year old son started to complain of ear ache at about 8pm tonight. He was crying and had woken up so i gave him 10ml of calpol. I called the out of hours doc but by the time they called back an hour later he was asleep and i didn't want to disturb him. He has woken again about an hour ago still in pain so again i called the doc and gave him 5ml of ibuprofin. The doc said to give him an hour and call back but its getting late and i also have a 6 year old asleep in bed. What would you do?

Hmmm, could the doc do anything though except to advice what you are already doing, and if antibiotics are needed, would you be able to get to a late chemist with the prescription, poor ds though, ear ache is horrid

Oh the dreaded ear ache {{{Hugs}}} for your impending lack of sleep. Is the ibuprofin working for now? if so I'd book in at docs in am, whilst administering more ibuprofin during the night. Earache is horrible, but there's not much ever done about it.

How old is he?

You should be able to give him some calpol as well by now if 4 hours has elapsed since his last dose.

The Paracetamol in calpol is pain relieving and will bring a temperature down. The ibupbrufen will act as an anti-inflammatory.

I'd administer calpol and see how he is in 45 mins.

Thanks. He's semi asleep now in my bed although i doubt i'll get any sleep. I think taking taking him out in cold isn't the best idea and you are right there isn't alot they can do but sometimes its reassuring to hear someone else say it. Will give him some more calpol when he wakes again
