Egg free flu vaccination?

SOT3 · 31/07/2021 11:18

I have never been able to have the flu vaccine as I am allergic to eggs, but would like to have one if possible this year due to the current situation.

Does anyone know if there are now any flu vaccines available which do not contain egg and how I would go about booking for one?

Yes, absolutely these are available on NHS, you just need to ask your GP surgery.

They aren’t any good however if you are elderly, as the eggless vaccinations don’t prompt an immune response in older people who typically have less active immune systems (the vaccine doesn’t cause harm it just doesn’t work, so it isn’t given to older people). I cannot recall what age they have set the cut off at, but just ask your GP surgery.

Thank you so much for such a helpful response.

I am 62 and do have some immune system issues (discord lupus) so I may not be suitable to have it from what you've said.

This is the green book chapter for the flu vaccination used by medical practitioners.
