Hypersensitive teeth............ help!!

I was told that I've got gum disease (recession) at the Dentist a few years ago, and have had sensitive teeth that I've always been able to manage. I force myself to go to the Dentist every 6 months, but last time I was nearly in tears from the pain of having air/water blasted around my mouth.

I use Listerine Gum treatment mouthwash before then brushing with a Sonic toothbrush that beeps if you're too firm... I've tried Sensodyne, Colgate, Arm & Hammer, Zendium and Regenerate all to no avail. I'm now trying Regenerate hypersensitive but it's getting to the point that I dread eating and drinking as it's so bloody painful for about 30 minutes afterwards. Since the heatwave, they've been awful.

This is miserable. I'm now 50 and am terrified that it's only going to get worse............ any advice gladly received.

I'm the same age & my mouth is now sore. Trying Biomin toothpaste, no rinsing. Think it helps. Off ebay, not cheap but cheaper than the dentist.

I have sensitive teeth too due to enamel damage, and hate the air/water blasting at the dentist. I ask them to numb my gum line all around first using a numbing gel which makes a big difference.

I haven't experienced the pain after eating/drinking but have you discussed with your dentist?

You have my sympathy! Flowers

My gums got better using a good old fashioned soft bristle manual toothbrush. Using an electric one, even on the gentlest setting was too strong for me.

Spidergran · 29/07/2021 22:23

My DD has enamel issues and we use a sonic toothbrush on low setting for her as a brush

You could also use tooth mousse or biomin after brushing. Smear on before bed and leave.

I was also told about gum disease and went into panic. I found HealThy Mouth blend by OralWellness which is made in the US. I originally ordered from there, but you can get it in the UK now if you google. I put three drops of oil on my toothbrush before toothpaste and have found sensitivity, soreness etc has disappeared.

Have you tried the sensodyne rapid relief one? It's about a fiver and works for me when the normal sensodyne doesn't

Nannyamc · 29/07/2021 23:28

Yes to sensodyne rapid relief and moutwash. Gums damaged due to diabetes. Have had no symptoms since i started using these.

Ask your dentist to numb you up before scaling.
And get a prescription for duraphat toothpaste

spinningspaniels · 30/07/2021 10:47

I'm also diabetic, and hadn't made that connection.......... makes more sense now.

Thank you for the suggestions - will try some others to see if it helps more. And will def ask for the numbing gel at the dentist, I had no idea about this Flowers

Can you get a mould made and use sensodyne or similar overnight? That's what my dm was advised to do due to severe sensitivity whilst taking a medicine.

danni0509 · 30/07/2021 11:33

Try biomin f toothpaste (make sure it’s F if you want fluoride, they make a C without) I also got a bottle of mouth oil (not actually sure what it is but it’s really good, you can see the reviews on amazon) it’s called deluxe dentals. Both of those help massively with sensitivity.

I’ve had years of trouble with my teeth, sensodyne / shop bought ones were shit.

danni0509 · 30/07/2021 11:34

Oh and sorry, main thing I forgot!

Curaprox soft toothbrush.

They are fantastic.

danni0509 · 30/07/2021 11:35

It’s actually ‘ultra soft’ curaprox.

My dentist says an oscillating toothbrush is the only way to go, no fancy program one that costs hundreds just a regular cheap one as long as the brush head spins. He doesn't rate sonic at all (and when asked about the water pick device he laughed out loud).
Also Sensodyne toothpaste and DO NOT rinse.
But most importantly he says you must must must use TePe interdental tooth brushes. And I can vouch they do work on gum disease.
I'm also having to see a hygienist now (due to lack of following my own and dentists advice!).
Teeth and ears are the bane of my life Sad

Nannyamc · 01/08/2021 23:20

Use sensodyne pro namel.tooth paste
Tooth brush and mouth wash. Have diabetes have no issue now.

storkstalk · 01/08/2021 23:24

Try getting duraphat toothpaste from your dentist

BrilloPaddy · 11/08/2021 20:42

Just to update, I've been using the Biomin F for nearly 2 weeks now and I am no longer wincing every time I eat or drink something. It took a good week to work but now the awful dull aching has just gone.

It's amazing stuff, and have changed to a soft toothbrush too.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
