i was recently told im border line type 2 diabetic. When i was told i didnt like the nurses attitude as i was told it was a lifestyle choice in other words i only had myself to blame i always thought nhs was supposed to be there to help and support people rather than make them feel judgedi told the practice manager who im registered with i didnt appreciate the attitude and just because somebody has weight issues its not always about greed or laziness for myself ive always had confidance and anxiety issues due to my appearance and the way ive been treated due to my appearance also this year i have been through a lot with losing both my parents and my pet yet i was told when practice manager phoned me that it was indeed my fault my responsibility and it was due to lack of exersice rather than any other issues the nurse was just doing theyre job. I asked if they would take the same attitude with a smoker who developed cancer i was told yes everyone has to take responsibility i just think so much for caring proffesion now i know why people have an attutude with nhs at times

I am a nurse and find this all quite sad
We have a duty to educate motivate support and empathise whilst delivering care
I think you probably already know if you are leading an unhealthy lifestyle and being a bit shitty is not going to help you change things
The truth of the matter is that Type 2 Diabetes can be reversed which could potentially save your life
The consequences with mobility, vision, renal failure , cardiac and vascular disease are absolutely horrendous .. I've had toes break off in my hand when trying to assist someone with their socks , it honestly is awful
Perhaps she was thinking of tough love ? Or perhaps she was just rude and not great at her job ?
Please focus your frustration and energy at improving your lifestyle , ask if they have dietician support , read as much as you can about stabilising blood sugars and lowering carb intake
You can do this and one day you can go back and say " I may have been borderline diabetic but I did something about it ! "
Good luck @morticia2020

Have they offered you support to reduce your weight and sugar either referring you to a programme for diet and exercise and / or explaining diabetes? If not ask them for support.

Some of my family are at risk of type 2 diabetes and the ones who have exercised and lost weight or never been overweight, have all reversed their pre diabetes. That doesn’t mean they are not overweight or obese but they do keep their sugars within the normal range. The ones that haven’t have many problems, and one has died with complications, it is a serious disease.

I did a course through work, it really scared me but also educated me into what happens. I didn’t know that even something like walking after a meal helps process the sugars. You don’t have to be a gym bunny but you do have to make lifestyle choices and changes. Easier said than done which is why you should ask your GP for help.

Not all health professionals have a good bedside manner but essentially what she said is true, it is your responsibility and within your control to take action.

Have you had bereavement counselling? That may be a helpful starting point, unresolved grief can cripple us.

Not all health professionals have a good bedside manner but essentially what she said is true, it is your responsibility and within your control to take action. - faev i get what your saying but for them just to put it down to greed and laziness when there can be other factors as well like my mental health with things that ive been dealing with but when ive said that i got the impression they thought i was just playing victim or making excuses people are nervous enough when theyre told about diatebis without staff playing the blame game it doesnt achieve anything

66babe - i think she was just rude there seemed to be a bit of an attitude like when she came to call me to go through to rom where we were going to discuss things most nurses in my experience will walk with you to room your going to and chat try and put u at ease she just came out called my name then walked off back into her room she never told me what my sugar levels were she did other tests made notes but never discussed anything with me then when i spoke to her boss today her boss asked what problem was i said i didnt like nurses attitude and she cut me off just started reading from nurses notes told me she had done her job i tried having my say but she just spoke over me and told me shed tell nurse i wasnt happy that was it it was like im going to have my say dont interupt some of an arrogance about them i feel also i was advised 2 months ago that they would look into getting councelling for me but nothing more been said

I would report them both whilst also looking into Michael Mosley fast 800 diet. I am sorry you have had to go through this.

I have had an awful year shielding, lost my dad to covid, trying to support my mum, whilst going through menopause and working from home with two grumpy/moody teenagers in exam years. So understandably I have gained weight. The nurse I saw couldn’t have been nicer she was lovely, certainly didn’t blame me and wasn’t condescending. They could also refer you to a Weight Watchers programme for diabetics free of charge.

Take care OP

Your practice can refer you to WW and you access different workshops to standard Weightwatchers.

I had a test and was in the diabetes category but with eating sensibly for three weeks reduced my risk to being in the pre diabetic category. Although I am told your blood sugar can take months to properly stabilise.

Life is a rollercoaster. I am on holiday at the moment so a bit out of kilter with my food again. But I have really noticed I am peeing loads (I really need to find a toilet when we go somewhere and I get sweaty and shaky if it takes too long to find one, I feel like a toddler), I am thirsty and have a dry mouth. I am drinking often (when we are not away from the cottage) and really don’t feel well at certain points in the day if I am too hungry, thirsty, do too much or need a wee etc. So from a personal perspective I will have to get back into sensible eating again when I get home. Its not easy OP I know I have eaten far too many snacks since lockdown but I would hate a nurse behaving like that towards me. Take care

@morticia2020 that's great you sound really motivated to find ways of helping yourself
I was going to mention the free SW or WW meetings - think GP can give you a voucher for free 12 weeks ..
in some areas you can refer yourself for free counselling also - although I promise you there will be a massive waiting list now after the 18 months we've all just had
Google it and see if it is in your area
Do you have partner/ children/ sibling/ friend that could encourage you ?
Maybe a short walk ? Steal a dog ? I am joking! Swimming is so gentle on the body but affective

A very underrated tool for encouraging healthy eating is good old ... water !
Drink gallons - it's free , you can add sugar free squash or some slices or whatever you fancy
Cucumber / apple/ watermelon/ orange / kiwi
Sometimes I make a big jug with apple and kiwi - stick it in the fridge and just keep drinking it in the day -

Water fills you up loads
Benefits your skin
Keeps things moving if you know what I mean
Is very good for mental clarity
Good for all body organs
Prevents headaches

Make very small goals .. maybe 5lbs at a time? Or an outfit that feels a bit tight ?

You can do this ! And remember one day you'll be healthy and she'll still be rude and uninspiring
