Had my thyroid results yesterday and thyroid levels were ok , but my B12 is really high (930). I haven’t been able to see a GP yet, so I did the bad thing and googled. Aaaggh i am now in a complete panic as all the possible reasons look very bad indeed...Liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, leukaemia, hidden undiagnosed cancers.
I am a vegetarian and not taking any supplements that contain B12.
I am tired, i am always tired due to thyroid, but I have been more tired since my second vaccine in particular, a couple of months ago.
I am now in a complete panic as I couldn’t see anything reassuring online at all.

Bumping in hope.

Hey CharlesChickens, I thought that was a completely ok level. B12 reference ranges vary around the world, check out this article.

PurplePumpkinDream · 27/07/2021 20:01

@BigGreen that’s an interesting article thank you! I was a bit worried when found out mine was 700. I think I’m better off not requesting copies of blood tests as I always find something not quite in range!

CharlesChickens · 27/07/2021 20:09

It seems to say it only isn’t a concern if you are on supplemental B12 ?
All the possible reasons for it seem so serious, my GP hasn’t been in touch yet - I think I might try and get a private appointment somewhere as everything is so slow. I would think that my diet is not very high in B12 naturally due to not eating meat, I had the bloods first thing when I’d only had a coffee.

The upper limit of the ref range the surgery gave me was 900.

Still haven’t heard from my GP so I think i might try and book a private GP appointment.

I get injections and they actively try and get me that high

DancingQeeeen · 29/07/2021 15:15

@CharlesChickens

I'd see it that if gP hasn't been in contact then they don't think it's urgent or anything serious. I know it's easy for me to say because I would probably be the same as you.
Could you possibly ring gp and just say you are anxious and see if dr can explain anything about the results to you

itsonlysubterfuge · 28/08/2021 19:25

My B12 is >1500 and has been for over a year. I take no vitamins and no injections. My GPs don't say or do anything about it, even though it worries me. I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted you to know I have high B12 for no reason and have for some time, but my GP doesn't seem to care! Hmm

NotN0wBernard · 28/08/2021 19:44

I am b12 deficient and have injections so I've done a fair bit of research about b12. It has the most complex chain of events that has to happen to process to get it into your cells compared to other vitamins. It has lots of cofactors (things it needs to be processed properly). The most important is folic acid (or folate). Have you been tested for that? It could be that you have a lot in your blood but it can't be transformed into it working at the cellular level if you are deficient in folic acid. Supplements may help if this is the case. And don't worry too much about the high b12, people like me can only dream of having high b12 and there is plenty of evidence that says it doesn't cause the horror stories you've heard about (sorry don't have links on my phone at moment but search for b12 society as they are great with resources). In summary, check your folic acid via blood tests and take a strong supplement if low. If folic is fine then see if you can get a full blood count to see what's going on with all the types of iron your body needs to function. I'm not well versed on how it interacts with thyroid but worth speaking to someone who knows their stuff on that. All the best x

My B12 has always come back high for years now. I'm vegetarian, don't take supplements but my GP just doesn't seem concerned despite testing me orginally because I had symptoms of low B12.
I've always had fatigue, muscle/joint pains and often wonder if my constant high B12 results are indicative of something else going on.

vivainsomnia · 30/08/2021 11:34

A number of foods have supplements. Many cereals, especially the 'healthy' ones. Slimming bars/drinks, some proteins bars and yogurts.

Sayachan · 14/09/2021 12:27

@CharlesChickens Hello! Have you heard anything further from your GP? I’m in a similar position, high b12 levels with no supplements. Done 3 blood tests now and all came back high but everything else normal (did additional tests for liver, kidney function etc). I now have another blood test booked in a couple of weeks for a MMA And homocysteine. Have you asked your GP for that? As far as I understand it can help see if your b12 levels are showing high in your blood when actually you are deficient. If that still shows high b12 then I think she said I could do further screening for cancers… and perhaps an ultrasound of the liver. Seems like we are in a similar boat so would be interested to know how things are going for you too. To me it sounds like it isn’t necessarily indicative of something dangerous, but there are definitely links to some cancers so I would prefer to investigate further…

Hi, I know this thread is old but I just got high B12 results too and I’m freaking out. I’m not taking any supplements.
To the people that posted here before, in case you see this, did anything ever come of yours? Thanks

naylord · 19/04/2024 12:30

Hi, new here. My daughter has been ill for sometime with fatigue and headaches. She's 12. Recently had her bloods tested. All ok apart from High B12. She doesn't take supplements and her diet isn't high in anything that would cause a B12 spike. First test was 909, second test a week later was 981. Also freaking out as to what could be causing this.

@CD9 Did you get any answers to your high levels?

Cld902 · 19/04/2024 21:58

Hi, sorry to hear you’re worried.
I never got an official diagnoses but my GP said it was likely due to how much cereal I ate.
My uncle is an experienced GP though and I spoke to him in detail about it and he really reassured me. He said my liver panel would have shown up if anything was concerning and likewise my full blood count would have flagged something. He said a high B12 level on its own is unlikely to be anything to worry about. So I’ve pretty much forgotten about it now! Hope that helps!

naylord · 20/04/2024 09:07

Thanks for reply. It’s the High B12 in combination with her symptoms that concerns me. Worried that something is being missed.

Mangolovers · 28/08/2025 17:24

Hi everyone

My blood test came back with a high B12 result (1007) but it also says liver tests and myeloma screen clear so no action. I'm really worried as the doctor's surgery has told me to do a urine test. Please any advice will be welcome. thanks
