It is driving me round the bend. It mostly effects my shins and the area at the top of the back of my arms (does it have a name?). My skin is dry and the minute I get into bed it I scratch like crazy. I've tried E45, Garnier Dry Skin, Dove mature skin stuff but nothing works and I'm sure it gets worse very year.

Think it's a combination of tights and cold weather. Please help. Any recomendations to stop the itching I have scratched my shins raw.

Are you using soap/shower gels to wash with?

Can you try getting some aqueous cream to stop your skin getting so dry.

Drink loads and loads of water.

Try using something like olive oil to moisturise with instead.

The best moisturiser I have found is the body shop shea butter ones.

Had forgotten about Aqueos cream, still ahve a tub somewhere from DS1's baby eczema. I use a gentle moisturising soap. It just seems strange that it only effects a few places.

I do, and I think it's linked to central heating - my hands particularly dry up like prunes as soon as we heat the house. I put some humidifier thingies on the radiators, drink more water. And use industrial strength body lotion for sensitive skin.

LiegeAndLief · 27/11/2007 13:05

Oh me too, it's been horrible at night. We put a damp towel over the radiator in our bedroom and that seems to have helped a bit. Definitely try the aqueous cream.

Notquitegrownup · 27/11/2007 13:13

I think that it is the central heating too. DS2 is scratching like mad. He had excema, but you can't see it now. There is no flair up, but at nights particularly he scratches and scratches and scratches.

We use Oilatum cream - it's expensive - £8ish for a large bottle, but available on prescription.

Lanacane cream would probably help to break the cycle of itchiness/dry skin. It has a local anaesthetic in it. Worked for DP in less than a week. You should be able to pick it up in the supermarket.

Don't bath/shower every day. I used to religiously and my skin was awful. Now reduced to 3 x a week with very thorough daily washing of essentials in between. It is MILES better.

LittleGoldfish · 27/11/2007 13:40

I personally couldn't go 1 day without a shower, I just wouldn't feel right. I know what you mean though shower gel really does dry a persons skin out.

I do think this time of year most people's skin is dryer than normal- I know mine is.

Botbot · 27/11/2007 13:41

I have this sort of thing - it was diagnosed as Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria at one point (ie, you're itchy but we don't know what's causing it).

When it was at its worst, even aqeous cream was irritating it, and Lanacane made it burn like mad.

I use this stuff called Emulsifying Ointment. It comes in big, cheap, generically named tubs from the pharmacy like aqueous cream does, but is more waxy in consistency. I find it's the only thing that soothes me, and I slather it on at this time of year.
