TMI alert...........My 2.4 year old dd has become irregular which i initially attributed to vitamin supplements i was giving her. i noticed about 4 weeks ago that she started going every other day, then 2 weeks later this extended to every 3 days so i went to the Dr's and was given lactulose. this would let her go within 24 hours but I now noticed she only goes If i give her 2 5ml teapsoons of this. I have left it 3 days max then given it to her. she is not distressed, and when she goes it is a lot but normal consistency. I have occasionally seen blood if I leave it 3 days which is bright red and a small amount so I think is due to slight tearing due to that large amount...what should I do now?

I have rebooked to see GP again but wanting to know if there is any other reason. she drinks a lot and has a balanced diet. he abdomen is not hard (which I hear could mean blockages). could the supllements have damaged her intestines somehow?

I am getting very anxious now, so any advice appreciated. Thanks

sorry went away for ages
the only supplement that i can imagine might make someone constipated is iron
is there a lot of iron in it?

Think you're supposed to take lactulose daily, not just when a poo is needed, as it's gentle acting and helps the process rather than producing a poo.

I took it when pg, it was a great help.

It is terrible when they start getting fissures as they then become hesitant to poo which exacerbates the situtation.

My son had problems for over a year despite a healthy diet, we were first given lactulose, then senakot and then movocol. Lactulose and movocol draw water into the stool to soften it. movicol (a tasteless powder that is mixed with fluids) worked better for us than lactulose. Senna is a stimulant which helps get it out, at one point my son was on 5ml twice daily. We also got refered to the homeopathic hospital.

From my experience do not be scared to give the medication (we were even told that we could increase the dose if need be) - the most important thing is that they get it out without suffering.

And yes - make sure the vit supplement doesn't contain iron.

Good luck!

Lactolose needs to be taken regularly and also with a lot of fluids, I was told it works with the fluid to soften the poo.

My DD has been on lactolose since she was born! She's now on Movocol.

needabiggersize, I was quite scared when they told me I could give dd 6 sachets a day and increase it if necessary! She's only 15 months old!!!
