I went to the GP last week because over the course of 2 days or so, a painful lump appeared right next to my nipple. I reassured myself that nasty things don't appear that quickly, and the GP said not to worry and she gave some antibiotic cream.

However 5 days later, it is still there, it is quite smooth and shiny, and still quite tender, possibly less than it was. Am starting to panic about all sorts of horrible things, and google is not my friend!

Any ideas? I will go back to GP on Thursday (can't go before then), but don't want to spend the next 2 days in state of panic!

could be an abcess and might need oral ABs rather than cream.

Try not to worry, and good luck!

Jacksmybaby · 27/11/2007 10:39

Could it be mastitis?
(Sorry have no personal experience of this but hopefully someone who does know what they're talking about will be along in a minute...)

emandjules · 27/11/2007 10:40

was it red. I get folliciitis all the time, inflamation of the hair follicle. They start of as red and sometimes sore and then get a bit smaller and turn shiny. Can feel lump underneath skin. If it is this, I get them all the time and have done for 15 yrs. One lasted 6 months. That might explain why you were given antibiotics cream

GoneFishing · 27/11/2007 10:41

The GP would have referred you immediately if there had been any chance of it being anything sinister!!

tortoiseSHELL · 27/11/2007 10:44

emandjules - yes it is red, and has a kind of dark dot in the middle. Does that sound the same?

DaisyN - the GP did say it might need oral ABs, will ask her.

mastitis - don't think so, but possible.

GF - that's what I keep telling myself!!!

Thank you - any more ideas?

god that has not worked, massive link!!!

tortoiseSHELL · 27/11/2007 10:53

I don't know - possibly a little bit, but is slightly more raised I think, and redder.

OP posts:
emandjules · 27/11/2007 10:59

Mine get very big and I think they look redder cos of nature of breast tissue and the rich blood supply. The antibiotic cream seems to be working. Mine normally take about 7-10 days to go, I am not an expert on cancer but I think dodgy lumps tend to be more under skin where you can feel them rather than see them and they are more normally skin colour. Most ppl who find breast lumps seem to feel them before they can see them.

If you are still worried, pls go back to GP but i would bet it is something similar to what I get. let us know how you get on.

tortoiseSHELL · 27/11/2007 11:02

emandjules, that is so so so reassuring, thank you! I think you are right about dodgy lumps, but I am a panic merchant, and always panic unduly. I hate google, it has just been coming up with breast cancer and skin cancer (which my mum had earlier in the year). Do yours hurt? That was what I first noticed, it was really sore, then it swelled up over 1-2 days. The cream doesn't really seem to be doing much, so maybe it does need some oral ABs. (fingers crossed)

Mine do hurt sometimes esp when things rub on them. I am the biggest worrier around and i am a nurse. More knowledge is dangerous. I tend to google things and worry too. You could go to GP on thurs and mention cream does not seem to be working. I have never used cream, they just clear up eventually. Will keep eye on thread. Take care
