Amoxicillin has not worked for a chest infection

As the title says. I have a none covid non productive chest infection. I finished a week long course of antibiotics on Thurday. I am still coughing and although it has not got worse, it has not got better.
I have called 111 and I am waiting for a gp to call back.

I have this too. Waiting to see a doctor next week as it's been going on for 5 weeks now.
The problem is they don't usually do culture and sensitivity tests to find out which bug you have and which antibiotics it's sensitive too (because only covid matters Hmm). However I do believe clarithromycin is better for respiratory tract infections. Maybe ask if your gp can do a swab to find out what you're dealing.

I had this for an ear infection - didn’t do anything. I had an allergic to reaction to penicillin as a baby I think which means you shouldn’t use it

Maggiesfarm · 24/07/2021 08:31

Your doctor will prescribe another antibiotic.

Northernsoullover · 24/07/2021 08:32

I've had similar problems before. I had to have 2 types of antibiotics and one they had given me was 250mg which they then increased to 500mg. Ring your GP or out of hours.

custardbear · 24/07/2021 08:33

I had this, went back to GP who gave me clarithromycin and it still didn't work. I think started vomiting when sick, DH developed the same thing too abs it ended up we both had whooping cough

Babdoc · 24/07/2021 08:37

OP, there is a lot of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) around at the moment. If that’s what you’ve got, then no antibiotic will work and you’ll just have to wait to get better.
Antibiotics are only effective against bacteria, and even then, many have developed resistance to amoxicillin.
Wait and see what your GP recommends.

Bagelsandbrie · 24/07/2021 08:41

You might need a different antibiotic and / or steroids and an inhaler.

Dinnertime22 · 24/07/2021 08:41

Thank you. Out of hours is calling back within the next 5 hours.

amoxicillan is the basic antibiotic of choice i believe, hopefully they can change it to something better,
do you need inhalers?
steroids?

AbsolutelyPatsy · 24/07/2021 08:45

sorry, different antibiotic, not necessarily better

HummingBeeBox · 24/07/2021 08:50

We always as for something other than this. It never works for our family

Dinnertime22 · 24/07/2021 08:56

I am not on any other medications. I am normally healthy, but this has taken me by surprise with it being so stubborn.
It started on the 7th and I waited before contacting my GP to see if it would clear.

Could be viral

AbsolutelyPatsy · 24/07/2021 09:21

sometimes coughs hand around a long time

AbsolutelyPatsy · 24/07/2021 09:24

do you still have a temperature?

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 24/07/2021 09:25

After a chest infection there can be a residual cough for upto 6 weeks. If this is the case then it will go on its own and no further antibiotics will help. Steroids may help by reducing any inflammation.

Dinnertime22 · 24/07/2021 10:25

Had a call. I must say I was quite impressed with the 111 service.
However, stated as it was likely to be viral no antibiotics will help and to call the gp on Monday to discuss further.
