I think my 3 week old has a hernia - any advice?

Can anyone give me a bit of advice please? This evening, I noticed a lump to the right side of my LO's groin just above his scrotum. It seems to have only appeared today and when I called the midwife she said it sounded like a hernia.

I'm seeing the GP tomorrow morning but in the meantime, I'm panicking! Does anyone have any experience of this or know what it may mean with regards to treatment etc?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

OK Collywobbles

This sounds like an Inguinal Hernia.

Very common in little boys, but will need surgery to repair as soon as possible.

My DS2 had this, operated on at 12 weeks old as a day patient, teeny tiny scar just about an inch long in the crease of his groin.

He's 5 now, right as rain.

Dr should refer you to nearest paed hosptal.

My DH had a huge hernia in his groin that was found when he was 3 months old.He had the op and has never had anymore problems.

Hi collywobbles

My DS1 had a hernia but it was actually his testicle that was swollen, not his groin.

Is it hard like a pea? if so, it could be a gland?

If it is a hernia, my DS1 had the op and was fine, was out 2 hours after. The worst bit was he had to have his legs up in the air for a couple of days as they couldn't fit him into theatre (bloody NHS) and this stopped it strangulating.

Thanks Guys...I saw the GP today and he confirmed that it is a small hernia but said that they wouldn't operate until he's a bit older (about 1) and that I should just leave it for now and take him back when he's about 6 months so they can start the referral process...
