Hiya,
I noticed today that I had bright red blood after using the toilet! TMI altert now... there was so much blood the water was red etc.

Been stupid and looked on the internet. I have got piles which come and go, and IBS, so can be sometimes difficult to pass!

Any advice? Do I need to see the Doctor?

well, a little bit looks alot iykwim

however, the worry comes when it is regular and you then become anaemic.
go to docs, tell em, see if they want to check things out.
may want to take some blood to check for anaemia and then leave till settles.

jofeb04 · 26/11/2007 17:18

Thanks for that. Going to try to see doctors next week sometime.

Well done! I had the same. I was in and out of A&E before being admitted. I hope it is just the piles. They are horrible, aren't they.

I was in hospital for a week while they barraged me with tests. They thought I might have had a hospital bug like C. difficile since I had really only just left hospital after an operation.

Anyway, 2 diseases down the line and I still have to have an operation for these bloody piles... Oh the joy, the joy...

Drink plenty of fluid, eat plenty of fruit and fibre. I waited months to see Consultant for mine and that's what he told me!!

hifi · 26/11/2007 20:00

j, i have this very other week, i have a pile, ibs and a fischer, get checked out to ensure nothing serious but basically i have to live with it. make sure you drink loads so dont have hard poos as this will make things worse.

Honneybunny · 26/11/2007 22:18

Hi, I just posted about the same problem this weekend. Was also losing what seemed to be lots of blood, without it being painful. A little bit of blood does go a long while, I think this is true. My bloodloss has now been diagnosed as piles. Sorry if TMI, but the GP I saw today said he couldn't actually feel them, but i did have a little skin tag there, which usually is indicative of piles 'higher up'.
he gave the same advice as the other posters: keep them soft, drink lots, eat prunes and fibre (i don't know about you, but fibre usually makes things worse for me).
he did say that if they get really troublesome, i can be referred to the consultants who will strangle them, or burn them
good luck with yours!

Bloody piles.. pardon the pun! it's childbirth that does it you know..

My cousin used to have what she described as a "bunch of grapes hanging out of her arse" and she used to make her then husband kiss them to test his devotion to her! Probably hence fact they are now divorced..

RosaLuxMundi · 26/11/2007 22:23

Was it cited as evidence of unreasonable behaviour Shiny? Because it should have been!

lispy · 26/11/2007 22:27

Are you sure it is from piles? I'd hate to scare you but... it's def worth checking out from my family experience.

susiecutiemincepies · 26/11/2007 22:46

hi
I'm a nurse, I specialise in Gastrointestinal medicine....so amongst others, this an area ive alot of experience with. ( yes, i see alot of bottoms and poo... )

Bleeding rectally is something which should not be left un checked for any length of time at all.
Have you have any other change in your stool habits? regularly going from soft to hard then hard to soft, for no particular reason? or any other changes at all?

I must say i get slightly concerned at reading posts like ""its bad when it gets to the anaemia stage, you need to get blood tests... "" Or words to that effect... if you are anaemic from any kind of bleeding especially rectal, things are well out of control.... I would be incredibly worried if that were the case!

It may very well be from piles, or from your IBS, however, it may not, so needs to be checked thoroughly by a Dr. The sooner the better.

You need to know exactly where the bleeding is coming from and a diagnoses made. Rectal bleeding (which looks significant in the pan) as you describe, falls into the protocol for fast tracking to a GI specialist. especially, if you have any other bowel habit changes...

I've seen almost every possible bowel problem, and seen many many patients who present with rectal bleeding. the majority i must reassure you, are ok. well, in saying ok, i mean, nothing sinister causing the bleeding. you can get significant bleeding from piles, ulcerative colitis, IBS Chrons, all sorts of bowel conditions. so it need not be something to be scared about. However, If left, and it is anything of concern, I cannot emphasise enough the importance of prompt diagnoses and treatment.

I honestly dont want to alarm you, at all. I also dont want you to be too complacent about it and leave it too long before going to GP. Make and appointment this weeks if possible, please ?

i'm very sorry if i sound bossy, nasty or alarming, i dont intend to... however i do intend to motivate you enough to get it checked out though... it is only your health i have in mind. so please dont be offended.

pinkteddy · 26/11/2007 22:52

Blimey you've worried me now susiecutie, I often get this (lots of bleeding) having seen the consultant a few years ago and received a diagnosis (piles from childbirth, which have healed and left skin tags - sorry if TMI) I assumed I didn't need to get this checked out again - do you think I should then? Apologies for the hijack folks.

paddingtonbear1 · 26/11/2007 23:03

pinkteddy if I were you I'd get it checked out again, yes. It's probably fine but best to be sure.

hellobellosback · 27/11/2007 09:49

I've been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. It is most unpleasant and the steroid treatment is pretty horrid as well. I feel very very weak and lost a lot of weight in hospital.

It's not much fun having cameras shoved up your bum, and I didn't realise that I would be in the hands of gut surgeons before the gastro team took over.

The doctors were very thorough in their investigations. At least now I can start to get better. I was also diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer, so it's all been a bit of a blow.

I still have an op for the piles awaiting, oh joy oh joy!!!!

susiecutiemincepies · 27/11/2007 12:34

I"m so sorry if I worried you. not my intention at all...

If you had a diagnoses, for the exact same thing that you experience now, then I would fairly safely say you need not worry. so long as it is exactly the same signs and symptoms you had a few years ago when you saw a Dr. If there are any changes at all, you ought to just be checked again. for peace of mind more than anything.

Like I say, i'd be fairly confident saying its the piles causing bleeding, so long as you had lots of bleeding before when you were seen.
Just pop tp your GP and tell them you still get it, and they will advise yo if you ought to get it looked at again.o

i was more concerned at the OP not having had any medical treatment or diagnoses and not acting on it swiftly. not even suggesting anything nasty going on for her, just not worth leaving these things.

Hellobello: I'm so sorry you've have such a rotten year. UC is a really nasty thing to have. SO painful and disruptive. I know the steroids can also be horrible to have to take long term.
And you diagnosed of br cancer, god life can be shit to us hey.

pinkteddy · 27/11/2007 20:40

thanks susie, I will go to GP as you say just for peace of mind. Hopefully OP will too! Hellobello sorry to hear about your experiences , hope the piles op will leave you feeling more comfortable anyway.
