Excruciating pain after wisdom tooth extraction

I had a wisdom tooth extracted on Thursday last week and the pain is unbearable. I'm sure it should be getting better by now but it's getting worse. I'm alternating ibuprofen and co-codamol but neither are touching it. I can feel a constant, pulsing throb, radiating through my jaw. I want to claw my face off. This is the worst pain I have ever felt - and I've been through labour twice.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? The tooth was impacted so I was warned it would be painful but I didn't think it would be like this. I don't think I have dry socket but I don't really know what I'm looking for. I've followed the dentist's aftercare instructions to the letter so I'll be really pissed off if that's what it is.

I've called the dental surgery but they can't see me until Thursday. I don't know how I'm going to cope with another two days of this.

@OobieDoo I had dry socket after a wisdom extraction, I couldn't see anything but the pain was immense. I went back to the dentist and had to go back 3 days in a row for them to pack the wound. It's sounds awful but my god the relief from the pain was like heaven. I smelt like a dental surgery while the stuff was in but it really really helped. Your dentist should see you ASAP. My husband is having two wisdom teeth out on Monday and I'm dreading him getting this

Yes. For me an infection after the extraction. 22 years and three childbirths later, I still maintain it is the worst pain I have EVER experienced.

I wish you well soon.

Thanks everyone. I'll give them a call in the morning. The receptionist said there were no dental surgeons in tomorrow, which is why they can't see me until Thursday, but surely a regular dentist will be able to help??

Poor you 😢

I got an infection after impacted wisdom tooth removal - such agony - ended up in A&E & was never so glad to see someone coming at me with a very large needle containing a painkiller (in the bum 😮)

Hope you get sorted soon.

Gp can also prescripe painkiller of you can't get a dentists to see you. I phone my gp once in a bubblering mess. They send my prescription to me. They must've felt sorry for me. Its shit I'm sorry op.

If you're in extreme pain they have to see you. Don't take no for an answer. I've been fobbed off by dentists for the last 2 weeks and finally saw a decent one yesterday because I demanded to seen whilst sobbing down the phone. I'm now on metronidazole which is unpleasant but hopefully it will work.

It does sound like either dry socket or infection. I had my upper right wisdom tooth out last year and have bone loss and loose pockets of gum as a result. I now have an infection in the loose gum area because something got stuck there. Never eating on the right side of my mouth again 😬

I hope you're being seen today and will feel better soon

OobieDoo · 21/07/2021 17:09

Yep, dry socket!

I've just seen someone. I called the surgery this morning and they managed to get me an appointment at their sister practice, seven miles away. The dentist has cleaned it out and put a dressing over it and given me a prescription for antibiotics.

I'm supposed to be having the wisdom tooth on the other side out in September but I'm seriously reconsidering that now because this has been far worse than any infection I've ever had.

Brilliant. I hope you are starting to feel better. It is bloody torture. Lots of love

@OobieDoo - glad it's been sorted, I remember the relief so well! On a positive note, just because it happened to this tooth, doesn't mean it will happen again.

I've never been a great dental patient but I plucked up the courage to have braces maybe 5 years after the dry socket incident (mainly because I knew I'd have to have another wisdom tooth out first) and my dentist knew how nervous I was and reassured me it was a super strait forward extraction and it would be really quick and easy.

And it was, I was literally like 'what it's done?' 'Really?' And he said 'yep all done, to be honest I thought it might be a bit tricky but I didn't tell you that because I knew you'd be super-stressed, but it went even better than I hoped' (sneaky bugger!).

And I had no problems at all afterwards, healed really well and really quickly - so what I'm saying is if it needs doing, don't delay (although maybe give it a month or two Wink)

Glad to hear you’ve had it looked at. I was going to suggest antibiotics. Hope you feel better soon xx
