Panicking over blood transfusion tomorrow

squishyegg · 19/07/2021 19:53

I had an emergency c section on the 11th July and I lost 1500ml blood. Was not offered a transfusion then.

Since then I have felt worse and worse and this morning ended up in a&e due to shortness of breath throughout the night.

There they did a chest x ray, bloods and heart ultrasound. All were okay apart from bloods.

Ended up back in maternity assessment as my blood levels are 79 so just on the cusp of needing a transfusion: they have said because I have lots of symptoms it will be best for me to come in tomorrow at 8am to start this.

I have had such a rough week with the c section and then I was treated for sepsis as my CRP level was 280.

My baby is in NICU and hopefully should be home soon but they won't discharge her until I am better.

I am exhausted. I feel awful.

But I am so worried for the transfusion tomorrow!! They said 1-2 bags will be needed and takes a couple hours.

Any advice or anything to make me feel better as I'm so scared xxxx

Do let us know x

I look around the room at all of the other people donating each time I go and feel really chuffed for us all that we are doing a simple, easy thing that will make a difference.
We do get a text but I just love the thought that it could be you op. Don’t really care one bit who my blood goes to, but love an actual person being at the end of it.

Houseofvelour · 19/07/2021 20:24

Please update us when you've had it and you're feeling amazing 😊 xx

I had an iron transfusion straight after my very complex CS (the floor of the OT was completely red!) The transfusion was fine, except when they unceremoniously plonked a big box of Anaphylaxis Drugs at the end of my bed, which freaked me out! All was well and I felt so much better afterwards. Congrats on your baby, OP - she'll be in your arms soon and you need to be as strong as possible for her.

My Dad needed many blood transfusions when he had a blood cancer called myeloma. He always felt much better after them. We were so grateful to blood donors.

Justme10 · 19/07/2021 20:53

I had a reaction and mine had to be stopped after 15mins, I think that is quite rare though. But I was being so closely monitored during that time so please don't worry you will be in good hands and well looked after.
And as other posters have said you will feel so much better and that's what your lovely baby will need from you Thanks

squishyegg · 20/07/2021 19:13

All done! Two bags, two hours each.

Thank you to you all who donate 💕

I have a bad headache this evening; curious if side effect?

Hey! Op sorry to hear that you're worried about this. To reassure you blood transfusions have so many safety protocols in place before a transfusion can even be commenced. You will have observations done before the transfusion and then about ten minutes after it starts then again at regular intervals to make sure it's going well. To be honest after the transfusion is complete you will feel so much better that you'll realise just how c*** you have been feeling!!

squishyegg · 20/07/2021 20:07

Getting into bed as my headache is awful!!

God- I wish I could say the blood transfusion has made me feel better but it really hasn't. Currently in bed and I've had to sit up due to shortness of breath still!

Thought I'd feel better by tonight at least. Can hardly breath like the last few nights!

I would call 111 x

Blackopal · 21/07/2021 15:44

I didn't feel like that at all after my transfusions. I would also call 111 or the ward you were on if they have you 48 hour open return?

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 21/07/2021 15:47

Please call and ask to be screened for a blood clot on the lungs.

squishyegg · 21/07/2021 15:54

I'm in a&e- query over blood clot on lung or infection. Waiting for x ray

Sorry Squishy, you are having a really crappy time of it.
I hope you get answers and treatment tomorrow and are able to put it behind you.

overthethamesfromyou · 23/07/2021 06:56

How are you today @squishyegg ? Did the tests happen yesterday?

squishyegg · 23/07/2021 08:22

Yes. No blood clots which is a relief but I do have a small amount of fluid between my lungs and chest wall xx

OP posts:
WorkingItOutAsIGo · 23/07/2021 08:44

Gosh you poor thing. That’s good news but hope they can work on solving the fluid issue.

Tealwarrior · 24/07/2021 13:23
