Broken toe

Hello!

I stubbed my pinky toe really hard yesterday and heard a bit of a crack. It is sore if I try to wiggle the toe or walk in shoes but ok if I walk barefoot or sit down. I don't need pain killers or anything. However it hasn't gone red or bruised. Could it be broken?

I did call 111 but the doctor just said to strap it as all they would do is X-ray it and strap it.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but I've broken toes twice (confirmed by x-ray) and the pain was unbelievable - I couldn't think about anything else and had to take ibuprofen and paracetamol. I certainly couldn't walk and both times I was on crutches for weeks. I couldn't believe a break in such a small bone could be so painful. I recommend strapping it and elevating your foot as I think that reduces the swelling.

Been to the hospital a couple of times with my mum for broken toes. They wouldn't even strap the toes!

Bigger toes can be important to get them to heal right l, especially the big toe. If its your little toe they probably wouldn't even strap it to the next one.

Thank you everyone! I should have said that it's my little toe- thankfully not the big one! It's been very frustrating today. Fine if I am barefoot but hobbling about if I have to wear shoes. I may just buy some crocs and live in them until it heals. Who would have thought such a small toe causes so much difficulties!

The crack might have indeed been the bone, but the fact there is no bruising means it might have been the ligaments moving rapidly.

You can just buddy strap it. Get some gauze or cotton wool and add a tiny bit between the little toe and next toe. Then wrap micropore/surgical tape gentry around. If no micropore, a plaster would do the same thing and just stops it moving about so much.

Its unlikely they'd X-ray a little toe, even a minor injuries unit or walk in centre.

I broke my pinky toe. Stubbed it and swore. It went a dark red and there was some swelling on the foot.

GP sent me to A&E who Xrayed it and confirmed I had broken the top joint of the little toe. Then basically laughed at me as there is nothing they can do. They stuck it to the next toe with plasters/tape and cotton wool in between. I could have done it. Not sure why Dr sent me but I think it was to check the foot out. They said 4-6 weeks to heal and don't do spin classes. Walking was fine, flip flops first then loose shoes.

This was early may, it still hurts when the dog stands on it and sometimes in shoes. I had a reflexology massage, that was nice. Hasn't stopped me doing things- I think after a month or so you are safe and its better to do activity as it gets the blood flow going.

Some years ago I broke my big toe, I dropped something on it (well, ok, yes, it was an empty one litre bottle of gin).

X rayed and they strapped it. Because it was a straight break they didn't put it in plaster. They told me that if the fracture moved they would pot it.

It caused much hilarity when I had to cancel a couple of meetings because id broken my toe. I got quite good at changing the strapping when it got dirty. Lollipop sticks broken and filed down to a smooth end helped.

Oh, and when the meetings were rearranged, the chief exec at the time (lovely woman) arranged for her private taxi to pick me up and take me back. I've never been in such a clean taxi.
