I am concerned that dd1 (5) is starting on the road to emetophobia. Any ideas how I can help her relax

before it becomes a major issue?

Like all kids she has had a few bugs on the past and coped well with them. However, she had a nasty d&V bug about 4 weeks ago, and since then has been very anxious about being sick - she has had 'tummy ache' most days and sometimes rushes to loo, trying to heave.
Came to a head last night - she had a little virus with temp, nausea, tummy ache - she was absolutely PANICSTRICKEN about being sick.Hanging over bowl, screaming if it was moved an inch away, almost hysterical.

How can I help her? We are doing calm, reassuring etc, but it isn't enough.

TIA (esp to any emetophobes who have read this)

My son ( 9 now) is like this and wails "why me " while crying and vomiting and in fact I was like that as a child too .......I think it's something that they grow out of and depends on the child's personality ( my dd5 doesn't mind at all she just takes herself off to the loo !!)...maybe explain that it's ok that she is feeling really bad and that everyone hates feeling sick but nothing terrible will happen to her , that she will be ok , that it's just frightening .......
poor little thing

Slouchy
Are you emetophobic?

I would agree, to tell her that its her body tring to get rid of any bugs, and afterwards she will feel better.

Slouchy · 26/11/2007 10:11

No I wouldn't call myself emetophobic although I fecking hate it (and after 2 pgs with severe hypermesis, should be an expert). I have been known to cry and wail 'why me' though, like aofaz's ds - and I'm 34.

Do you think your dd has learnt her behviour from you?

aoifaz · 26/11/2007 10:50

I think all children are different .......
My son would never have seen me or anyone else freaking out about puking but he is the way he is ........my dd ( 5yrs old) HAS seen her brother in his panic stricken state and it has had no effect whatsoever .she is as cool as a breeze......
don't think you should blame yourself slouchy- mums feel guilty enough about everything else already !!

hayCHingleBells · 26/11/2007 10:57

I do agree aoifaz.
But it is a possibilty that she has seen and learnt from her mother.
Of course, it may not be. It may just be the way she is as you say.

It actaully sounds, from the op that it a recent change from usually ok with it to panicstricken having been very ill with her last bug.
I guess than that she needs to be sick again in order to realise that it isnt always going to be as bad as it was the last time?

Slouchy · 26/11/2007 11:01

No, not learned from me haychee - she has never seen me being sick and I am upbeat and "whoops, never mind-ish" when the children are sick.
Will read other replies now.

I do agree that the trauma of last time is what has caused her change in feelings.
