Threadworm - again! How can I help prevent it?

Dd has threadworms for the third time in 18m or so - the previous time was only 3m ago. Apart from the obvious hygiene practices, is there any way I can help prevent her catching them? Does anyone know whether homeopathy could help? Is there anything she can eat (garlic, I believe, has been debunked as an anti-worm food)?

It's hideously unpleasant for her, because we only ever discover them when the infestation is so bad that they cause vaginitis . Ugh - worse than headlice.

How can worms cause vaginitis??? Eh??
You all need to dose yourselves-not just the kids.

They are mobile. They come out of the anus at night to lay eggs and can move forward IYSWIM.

I only discovered dd had threadworm the first time because I took her to the GP thinking she might have a UTI. It was the GP who told me about the vaginitis and to check for threadworms.

Vaginitis just means an itchy fanny.
Nowt else.
PC,they don't cause any harm y'know.

PC - DS1 got threadworms last year, i was bfing DD and we were all treated - DD and i had a different med from the rest of the family.
check with GP, you do all need to be treated at once. HTH!

Haven't anything really helpful in terms of prevention except that we have found that antibacterial-alcohol-hand-gel-er,stuff that you leave on hands after washing has really helped our lot, cross fingers no repeat episodes yet

Dd wakes at night crying because of the unbearable itchiness and pain in her vagina.

i meant to say, for P.C, that DD was 11mo at the time.

Discovered yesterday DD1 has them. Its always her!
DS's have never had them! DD2 had them once.
I will be getting meds again for us all tomorrow.
Don't know best ways to avoid them.

PC, I took pripsen when bf my 20mth old, when we got an infestation. He had to have pripsen too, the others had ovex. I just had to make sure I took the meds when I just finished a BF and left a bit of time before the next one. But the GP had to prescribe it, the chemists would not give me anything.
And clean like a mad woman !

Biting nails and sucking thumbs are one of the biggest problems I think.

Elibean · 26/11/2007 10:23

PC, you can be dosed - I took Pripsen (piperazine, not the mebendazole one) when I was pregnant and dd1 had suspected TW. OB was fine with it, and no harm came to either of us.

Just make sure its the right Pripsen - they do both sorts.

Your poor dd - I would try a lot of Vaseline (or Metanium, according to another MNer) on her perineum, and around her anus, after her bath/before bed: might stop them moving easily, and/or might stop her feeling them. It can take a day or two for them to die, after Ovex.

PrettyCandles · 26/11/2007 10:36

I was told by the practice nurse that the GP said not to treat the baby and me unless we were actually infested, in which case they would prescribe Piperazine.

I haven't been able to find any info on this on Kellymom or Jack Newman sites.

(BTW it's the third infestation in 13m, not 18m.)

I have heard eating pumpkin seeds can be helpful if threadworms are about. I've just had to treat the whole family. Gave the under 2 pripsen as she defifnitely had them . You can ask for it over the counter - I did, just lied when they asked the age! Personally I think you should dose the whole family as they are so easily spread - especially if you've an over 1 who's crawling around shoving everything in her mouth!
