This morning I was rushing down the stairs when not fully awake and lost my footing and slipped. Im not sure how it happened or quite how I landed but i immediately had the most horrendous pain in my foot. I literally saw stars!
As the day has gone on its getting more and more swollen and ive gone from being able to hobble about and put a bit of weight on it, to not being able to walk at all.
Its strapped up, its elavated and ive just taken two ibruprofen.
I cant bend it and i can only move my two biggest toes.
At what point is a trip to casualty called for? Do you think it will settle if i leave it for a couple of days?
We have a separate illness in the family at the moment which we are trying to manage so this is the worst possible time for me to be off my feet:(

I think you need to go. If you leave it, it may get worse and you'll be off your feet for longer.

I think it would be sensible to go to casualty. I did a similar thing waited like you did but eventually went to our minor injuries unit. They wouldn't x-ray it, but I ended up having to go back a few weeks later because it wasn't much better and found out I had damaged my tendons and it took 9 months and physio before I could move my toes properly. Hopefully whatever you've done will heal quicker, but I always think it is better to get things checked out rather than risk making an injury worse by trying to continue to use the affected area.

It sounds like you need to get it looked at. If you've broken something it will need fixing!

Watto1 · 17/07/2021 14:43

It may be just bruised or it may be fractured. The only way to tell us with an X-ray. If it’s fractured, the sooner you get seen the better. I think you should pop to A and E as soon as possible. Good luck!

FadedRed · 17/07/2021 14:43

Yes, you need to go to A&E.

FuckUcuntychops · 17/07/2021 14:47

Yes go and get no point sitting about wondering if it’s broken. Just go and find out.

FuckUcuntychops · 17/07/2021 14:48

X-rayed!

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/07/2021 14:49

A&E I'm afraid.
Take snacks and a fully charged phone.

3beesinmybonnet · 17/07/2021 14:53

Even if it's just a bad sprain or strain they will give you crutches and it's amazing how much more mobile you can be once you get the hang of them . Just remember to take them back when you're OK.
At least that's been my experience a couple of times but many years ago

Lindy2 · 17/07/2021 14:55

If you can't put any weight on it you do really need to get it checked out.

Wombat36 · 17/07/2021 14:56

Minor injuries might work better, if you have one nearby.

LizB62A · 17/07/2021 15:13

Call 111 and see if they suggest a minor injuries or A&E

RubyGoat · 17/07/2021 15:16

Take a water bottle as well!

Aquamarine1029 · 17/07/2021 15:17

Of course you need to go to A&E.

elevenses75 · 17/07/2021 15:19

I was in minor injuries yesterday locally and it was empty except for me - gp referral for x ray and a man who did something pretty similar and was getting his leg x rayed before me, so might be the best place to go if you’ve got one local. Hope you’re ok, if you decide not to go please keep an eye on the colour of your foot/leg shoood be nice and pink and warm, no numbness or pins and needles and you really should be able to move your toes - all of them and be able to feel them. Sounds very sore, I would get it checked as leaving it might make anything you’ve done to it harder to fix if you’re trying to put any weight on it etc. Take care op and hope things improve, these things always come when you need it least

purplesequins · 17/07/2021 15:25

yes go
it could be broken, but only an xray can show for sure.

good luck!

TeaChocKitKat · 18/07/2021 15:26

Thanks everyone. I admitted defeat in the end and took your advice as the swelling and pain just kept getting worse. Five hours in casualty confirmed it was broken.

Poor you. I was just going to saw it sounds like a fracture. I saw stars too. I hope you're not too uncomfortable in this heat if you're in plaster

purplesequins · 18/07/2021 15:32

poor you. hopefully a moonboot & painkillers get you well on the way.

FuckUcuntychops · 18/07/2021 19:33

Sorry op hope it heals quickly

romdowa · 18/07/2021 19:35

Sounds like a n e time for you. I wouldn't bother with a walk In clinic, my friend went a few weeks back after a fall, they told her it was a sprain(without an xray) but I insisted she went to the hospital and once xrayed I turns out it was broken and needed surgery.

Wolfiefan · 18/07/2021 19:37

@TeaChocKitKat I’m so sorry it’s broken. But at least you went. I didn’t. I broke my ankle over 15 years ago. Didn’t get medical attention and it still bloody hurts. It’s misshapen and I hurt the ligament too.
Wishing you quick healing. Flowers

megletthesecond · 18/07/2021 19:43

Oh bless you. It's rubbish isn't it Flowers. At least you know and can make sure you look after it while it heals.

TeaChocKitKat · 18/07/2021 20:03

I have a moon boot at the moment but the fracture clinic should call me tomorrow to arrange for me to have a cast.

By the time I got to casualty I have never been in so much pain - the wait was horrendous! As soon as the nurses saw me they instantly gave me very strong pain killers and put me in a wheelchair. Anyway, hopefully it will heal quickly now.
