I know Manchester Royal Infirmary have a speciality in cardiology, but if you're going through the NHS I don't think you can decide which hospital he can go to, especially with a CABG as it's not classed as a major procedure

DogsSausages · 16/07/2021 11:13

My choice would be Guys or The Brompton, but would it depend of where you live if its NHS. Hope he recovers well.

You need to read up about the surgeon who will be doing the operation, they will publish what they specialise in and at what level. What area of the country is he in.

LittleTiger007 · 16/07/2021 11:22

Papworth is probably the best in the country (Cambridge) but you may not get a choice on the NHS.

My dp had his at John Radcliffe- specialist centre all good.

According to BBC in 2015, it showed ' ' 'Cardiac unit rated among top three in UK for surgery - the unit at University Hospital of Wales (UHW) had a survival rate of 98.67%. It was placed with Southampton and Papworth as the three best-performing.'

This was 6 years ago, I am not sure if their performance remains. Perhaps some hospitals have improved their performance already.

I can move closer to the hospital any way

It's not just the performance ratings, it also depends on the patients general health, severity of their heart disease. Some surgeons take on much more complex cases than others. What does his current cardiology team recommend. Is he going private or waiting on the NHS list, some hospitals have their referral systems, I think Southampton are somehow linked to Guys.

DogsSausages · 16/07/2021 13:30

You can look up any doctor, say for instance you choose Wales Uni, look on their website, go onto the cardiac or cardio thoracic page which will list the surgeons, you can see what experience and training they have received and what hospitals they work in.

It can be found, you might have to cross reference their names but the the info is there and you might find more info on their private websites or private hospital sites

You talk of moving to be near a good hospital. Does your father have time for that? Often if someone needs CABG then it’s usually something that needs doing pretty urgently. My dad had triple bypass surgery earlier this year at Papworth. They were amazing but so are many other hospitals. He had it done a month after learning that he needed it - so don’t waste time moving, see what your father’s dr recommends. It then took 3 months before he was ready to resume life to any level at all. He will need family around him to look after him. This was particularly tricky this year during covid. There were no nurses visiting him at home at all - which he should have had really and would have in normal times. These questions are as important as where he has the surgery.
I hope you get the information you need OP. Good luck to your father.

user1619706997 · 16/07/2021 16:58

thank you very much. he is in the waiting list, doctor said he need to wait at least five months for surgery.

as i know, the avg survival rate in uk is around 95%, only top 5 hospitals (as BBC mentioned in 2015) reached 98%, I hope today the avg SR could improve more.

That’s hard. We certainly found the waiting list shorter for Papworth. I hope your dad gets seen sooner than you expect.

user1619706997 · 16/07/2021 17:19

thanks for the information.
