Why do my underarms smell even though I'm clean and use antiperspirant

AntiHop · 14/07/2021 21:07

I shower every morning with soap but still my underarms smell. I'm not sweating much.

I use antiperspirant. I started washing my underarms with soap at bedtime too, which has helped, but not eliminated it. Removing underarm hair also helped. I change my clothes every day.

Any ideas please?

Which antiperspirant do you use? There are stronger ones like Mitchum for example?

oneglassandpuzzled · 14/07/2021 21:47

Are you In perimenopause? It can really alter things under the arms!

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 14/07/2021 21:48

This stuff is brilliant. It kills the bacteria that make the smell under your arms. Lasts about 5-7 days.

Wash with proper soap, dry thoroughly, then apply a little of this.
You can use deodorant as well if you want on inbetween days although you don’t always need to.

Do the under arms of your clothes smell after they have been washed ?

Fruityfriday · 14/07/2021 21:49

I use a few drops of tea tree oil mixed in with soap on the shower sponge. Just don't accidently forget and do your foof with it. It's quite stingy

Mine do !
UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 14/07/2021 21:52

I’d try swapping out deodorants for a few weeks.

That said, are you sure that your clothes don’t smell when you put them on? I’ve had periods when certain clothes weren’t coming fully clean in the wash and for some reason they magnified any emerging BO throughout the day way more than I’d expect. A vinegar soak for the clothes helped. Oxi Clean is good too.

DinosaurDiana · 14/07/2021 21:52

Make sure you’re using biological washing powder.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 14/07/2021 21:54

How old are you?

I’ve found Mitchum has solved my issues.

lettie9 · 14/07/2021 21:57

@Mycatismadeofstringcheese wow thanks for the tip. I've never heard of this before, it sounds like magic

IceLace100 · 14/07/2021 22:02

@DinosaurDiana

Make sure you’re using biological washing powder.
I was going to say this. You can also make a paste out of biological washing powder and a little bit of water, then spread the paste on any offending T-shirt pits. Leave to soak then wash as usual.

If that doesn't work, it might be time for some new T-shirts made from natural fabrics.

I also know some medications can change your body chemistry. A friend of mine started new anti depressants and got a bit pongier!

There are clinical strength deodorants available over the counter. Might be worth a trip to the GP to rule out any nasties?

PeonyTime · 14/07/2021 22:03

I need to exfoliate my pits occasionally (like once every few months).
I put a couple of drops of tea tree oil into whatever exfoliant I have around, and am very gentle.

Nogardenersworld · 14/07/2021 22:13

Make sure your clothes aren’t smelly before you put them on

Also I don’t know anyone else who feels this way, but I sometimes associate certain deodorants with a sweaty smell.
It’s just because I’ve worked out, or been sweaty maybe one day when I’ve worn that deodorant

Then the next time I wear it I smell it and think I smell sweaty
But it’s just the deodorant scent that I can smell

Also I’ve had eczema previously and had to change soaps, when I did I felt like I didn’t feel / smell quite as clean and fresh - so think about what soaps you’re using

Ilikeknitting · 14/07/2021 22:16

Definitely recommend using soap and not shower gel. I always feel sweaty if I only use shower gel, not that it should make a difference but it does.

Try applying roll on deodorant then blasting with spray deodorant, belt n braces if you like.
Wear natural fibres if you can. If it’s really bad you can see your GP and they can send you for underarm Botox !

whoami24601 · 14/07/2021 22:17

I have this and I found using talc out of the shower stops it. Deodorise as usual xx

Bargebill19 · 14/07/2021 22:20

Reaction to the material? I’ve had some tops which I just cannot wear for this reason, yet others with the same material are fine. I assumed it was a chemical reaction to do with only in those particular tops.

Ha I should be on commission. It’s the only thing that’s properly worked for me. The pot is tiny, but as you only use a little it lasts for ages.

hayley013 · 14/07/2021 22:28

Try Odaban from Boots, nothing worked for me and now I just use this once a week, don't need to wear deodsrsnt at all

wonkylegs · 14/07/2021 22:30

If your clothes have a lingering smell there are various washing products that can help I use www.dr-beckmann.co.uk/products/stain-devils-antiperspirant-and-sweat-marks/ on DHs work shirts

3beesinmybonnet · 14/07/2021 22:46

I would also recommend Odaban. DHs feet used to smell like rotten cabbage. He started putting this stuff on every few days and I honestly couldn't tell which socks were clean and which were dirty. When he changed to a less stressful job the smell stopped so maybe yours is stress related.

Nuggetnugget · 14/07/2021 22:50

I spray clothes with white vinegar on the underarms and wash in bio powder.

DaffodilSunshine · 14/07/2021 22:57

Whenever that's happened for me, it's usually been a lingering smell on my clothes even after washing. Like some others have mentioned, I soak the armpit areas in white vinegar before washing for those clothes that seem to be an issue. I only do it for 10-15 mins but that seems to be enough

Badabingbadabum · 14/07/2021 22:57

Hormones? I get stinkier before my period and I was on a pill years ago that made me absolutely stink. I use a sure cream deodorant at the moment - one of those more expensive ones for sweaty people - as it dries quickly but on days when I know I might smell more I pat a bit of talc on before I go out. I will try the stuff recommended by pps though.

Bio washing stuff does help more.

NekoShiro · 14/07/2021 23:24

I find I need to scrub and exfoliate mine to get rid of the musk

I have a 3 month old baby. It seems to have got worse since she was born.
