Blood in urine - panic!

dorris88 · 14/07/2021 09:56

So I suddenly got a UTI (never had one in 30 years of my life)

Antibiotics didn't solve it. Started to get lower back and abdomen pain.

Went to GP who up to this point had not given urine test.

Urine test shows blood in urine, no sign of infection, but sent me packing with more antibiotics and possible kidney stones.

Now when I look at blood in urine accompanied by my other symptoms, but no infection, it leads me to bladder cancer every time.

Should I request a second opinion? Is it likely that it just is kidney stones?

I'm soooo tired all the time since having it and I just feel somethings up.

Yes. Your gp Should refer you to urology once you have two episodes of blood in the urine. Please ask them for an urgent referral to urology as it is easy to rule bladder cancer out and much better to
Manage if found early.

How long after you had finished antibiotics did you get tested at GP? I’ve been told before the “threshold” for enough cells to say infection is quite high as some bacteria is found in all urine so they have to see a number much higher than normal. So a negative test doesn’t mean no infection just not a really bad one . Also you say bleeding with no with other symptoms but you’ve listed a bunch of symptoms you’ve had with it! Get a second opinion if you’re worried but really don’t panic

Likely causes depend on a few things
was the blood found on a dipstick or MSU?
A urine test, even a MSU is not accurate if done when you’ve just had or are on ABs
The pain would be more indicative of a UTI or stones.
Generally speaking if urinary tract cancers cause bleeding it tends to be painless and often clearly visible without dipping.
The other thing to bear in mind is that dipsticks for blood are known for false positives for blood.
The MSU is more reliable.

I've had many UTI over the years
Even when they were very bad and the sample was pink from blood the result would still come back and say I didn't have an infection !
I'm sure this will just be part of your uti

DP had blood in urine. I think it was caused by dehydration. He definitely did not have a UTI or bladder cancer.

You need a urology referral, especially with the lower back & abdomen pain. My GP told me that blood in urine required a fast track appointment & that is what I was given. All clear thankfully.

I've had blood in my urine with UTI's, I once had a UTI they had to do a few different tests for because the standard dip pot one didn't pick up the strain I had. I'd keep at it with the antibiotics and request a follow up in a weeks time - I've also had to take 2 rounds of antibiotics for some UTI's as they wouldn't budge.

NoNobramma · 17/07/2021 23:27

@dizzydizzydizzy how do you know he doesn’t have bladder cancer? Or prostate cancer? Blood in the urine shouldn’t be ignored or assumed to be something unimportant.

dizzydizzydizzy · 18/07/2021 12:28

@NoNobramma I know he didn't have cancer or anything else wrong with him because he has every test imaginable at the hospital. Medical conclusion was that the blood in his urine was caused by dehydration.

And yes, you are right blood in urine should be taken seriously.
